About The Exchange

The Exchange is a modern European restaurant and riverside wine bar in Londonderry, at Exchange House near the City Hotel. The kitchen stays open later than many nearby places, which suits late-night diners. The menu covers steak, fish and chicken, with salmon and a chicken skewer among the dishes. Customer Review Summary

Diners most often single out the fish and steak, with the haddock described as lightly smoked and poached over slightly spicy curried rice with a cream sauce, and the salmon as not too dry. Steak and fish are called perfectly cooked, and the steak and ale pie, the duck breast, the chicken skewer and a chicken stir-fry with a nice spicy kick also draw praise. One lunch visitor liked the tuna and cheese sandwich and the creamy seafood soup, and another paired the duck with a Smithwicks. Reviewers describe a sterile, hotel-like interior that still feels welcoming, with friendly service even when packed. The recurring trade-off is the wait for a table. Several arrived without a booking and sat at the bar instead, with food reaching them in about half an hour despite the crowd. One group of seven students without a reservation was seated right away, and a late-evening party was fed shortly before closing.

“This restaurant was recommended by a museum guide and was only a short distance from the City Hotel. The interior is tasteful, modern with a welcoming staff. We were promptly seated without reservations, granted it was early in the evening. Plenty of menu choices: red meat, chicken and fish. The salmon was just right, not too dry. The chicken stir-fry had a nice spicy, but not too hot flavor. The servings were enough that we passed on dessert. If we lived here we would likely go again.”

“Just nuts - best haddock dinner I've ever had. Lightly smoked then poached (best I could tell), served over slightly spicey curried rice with a decadent cream sauce not on, but in dollops around the plate? With bits of sauteed pancetta? OMG!”

“Food is amazing. Service great. Atmosphere welcoming. Expect to wait approximately 15 mins for a table but worth it”

“We were in search of a traditional pub dinner but the pubs were heaving so we wandered around and happened upon this place. What a pleasant surprise! We didnt have a booking and there was quite a wait for tables so we opted to sit and eat at the bar. Food arrived within 30 mins which was impressive as the restaurant was packed. Food was great ! Loved the chicken skewer and my son loved his meal too. If in Derry add this to your list”
