About Cinder - St John's Wood

Cinder - St John's Wood is a modern European restaurant in London, at 5 St John's Wood High St, where the kitchen cooks everything over fire. Counter seats face the grill, which puts guests right beside the cooking. The menu follows a small plates format, so a table can order several dishes and share them. Among them are the crab doughnut, grilled chicken thighs and house focaccia. A cocktail menu runs alongside the wine list, and a downstairs dining area provides seating beyond the counter. Reservations are required.

Customer Review Summary

Grilled chicken thighs come up most often, with diners calling them delicious and saying they taste like heaven, though one found them basic next to the vegetarian small plates. Close behind are the salmon, the squid (excellent for two reviewers, disliked by another), the s'mores dessert, the crab doughnut and the beetroot starter, with the focaccia and burnt leeks also singled out. Staff are described as friendly and welcoming. The complaints are specific. One weekly regular reports an off night when the prime rib arrived well done and chewy and the triple cooked potatoes were not crispy. Portions are called small, so several plates are needed and the costs add up. Downstairs is described as crammed with terrible acoustics, and one diner at the kitchen counter found the grill heat intense and said the seat cushions needed cleaning. The wine by the glass is called limited. One reviewer suggests the sample menu for a first visit, and when an order went slightly wrong, the owner took care of the table.

“Really enjoyed Cinder! The food was delicious, especially the sauces, potatoes and squid. Portions are quite small, so you need to order several dishes. We had to remind them to apply our First Table discount, but overall a lovely meal.”

“I really enjoyed my lunch here. Everything we ordered was lovely. But I definitely enjoyed the vegetarian dishes more than the chicken thighs we ordered. They were tasty but just basic and something that i could have easily made at home. But id definitely go back here to try more of the vegetarian and vegan small plates. The spicy crab doughnut had no spice that i could detect, but was really lovely. Everything was beautifully presented and tasty. There was a little hiccup with our order but the owner took care of us.”

“Cozy restaurant in a residential area. Seems like this place is mostly visited by locals, it's not touristy. The service was excellent and the food was absolutely delicious. Something so simple as grilled chicken thigs tastes like heaven.”

“This review is based solely on our experience on Thursday night and not on our many previous visits, which have consistently been excellent. Cinder has been our favourite date night spot for the past year, and we have visited almost every week. The service has always been excellent, and the food has consistently been outstanding, which is why this review is so disappointing to write. When we visited on Thursday, the experience was noticeably below the standard we have come to expect. We ordered our usual premium cut prime rib, which is one of the more expensive items on the menu and a dish we know very well. Unfortunately, it arrived significantly overcooked and nowhere near medium rare, more well done and had a texture and flavour that felt more boiled than grilled. It was chewy and lacked the quality we have always enjoyed. The issues extended beyond the steak. The triple cooked potatoes were not crispy as they usually are, the beetroot starter lacked the punchy chilli flavour we normally love, and even the focaccia seemed less grilled than usual. We understand that the regular team and chef may have been occupied with the opening of the new restaurant down the road, but if the restaurant is being run by a different team for the evening, the standard should remain consistent. As regular customers who order the same dishes almost every week, the difference was impossible not to notice. What makes this particularly disappointing is that we genuinely love Cinder and have recommended it to many friends. We hope this was simply an off night, because we’d love to see the restaurant return to the exceptional standard that made it our favourite local restaurant in the first place.”

“I dined at Cinder and overall had a good experience, mainly thanks to the food. The salmon and squid were genuinely excellent — both beautifully cooked and full of flavour. The cabbage salad was fine, though not particularly memorable. The menu feels well thought through, even if not every dish stands out equally. The wine-by-the-glass selection is quite limited, which might be disappointing if you were hoping for more variety. Service was fast and friendly, which I appreciated. That said, I wouldn’t recommend sitting at the counter by the kitchen. The heat from the grill was quite intense, and with cocktail preparation happening right behind, it also got fairly noisy. I also noticed that the seat cushions could use more attention in terms of cleanliness. Overall, the food really is the highlight here, and strong enough to make the visit worthwhile — just perhaps with a more carefully chosen seat next time.”

Highlights

“"‘Cinder’ was born out of the love Jake Finn has for cooking over fire. From a young age he was always fascinated with fire. The infantile curiosity grew into a respectful passion for cooking over fire and now he sources the best ingredients he can find and everything is ‘kissed’ by the flames."”
