About Sonora Taquería

Sonora Taquería is a Mexican restaurant in London, at 208 Stoke Newington High St, built around Sonoran-style tacos served on flour tortillas, or tortillas de harina. The caramelo taco layers carne asada under a cheese crust, and the adobada taco sits beside it on the same menu. Diners who prefer corn can upgrade to a corn tortilla. Salsas are self-serve, so each person can season their own order at the table. Horchata is the drink on the menu to go with the tacos. The dining room inside is small.

Customer Review Summary

The recurring complaint is the queue. Reports range from a 30-minute line at 3PM to an hour-long wait for a seafood weekend, though another says the line moves very quickly. Reviewers also call it a little expensive, with a group of four getting everything in take-away containers and plastic cocktail cups. Vegetarians are poorly served: the only options are a plain quesadilla and a cactus taco that one reviewer found underwhelming, and the bean quesadilla reportedly contains lardons. The small, crowded interior is noted too, with one reviewer saying a corn tortilla upgrade is probably worth it.

“There’s only one vegetarian option available - Plain quesadilla 🌱 I ordered 3 and you get the option to accessorise your order, so I added some salsa and salad. The other options looked great but sadly I wouldn’t recommend for veggie/vegans, the bean quesadilla has lardons in it too. Apart from the limited veggie options, the staff and vibes were good.”

“Four of us went to the highly popular Mexican restaurant last weekend when it advertised to have a seafood weekend. As expected, there was a queue even before the restaurant opened. We thought we would only queue for something like 20mins but ended up waiting for an hour. We ordered their ceviche, seafood tacos & quesadillas as well as grilled prawns. Also tried their cocktails which were served in dainty champagne style cups albeit plastic. Food was as good as expected although a bit on the expensive side. We spent £100 for four, all in take-away containers. I have to say it’s probably one of the best Mexican joints in London, perhaps not 100% authentic, but delicious never-the-less.”

“Something very charming about an unassuming storefront and a flickering menu board to pair with it. I’ve had good Mexican food, but this is probably the first time that I think I’ve ever had Mexican cuisine that is truly great. A bona fide gem of a find for anyone who loves their food. I ordered three tacos: the caramelo, the cabeza and the adobada. All were amazing in their own right with the cabeza oozing with juice, the caramelo bringing together a mixture of textures and the adobaba being on a level of its own. That pork was simply sublime! Somehow, every one of the self serve salsas were flawless and elevated each and every taco they touched. Note that the salsa habanero genuinely does have a kick to it, albeit delicious :). It got messy, but it was so worth it. Amazing value for London and this review should make it obvious to get down here for yourself.”

“known as a local gem got three Mexican tacos. it was reminiscent of New York's flavours and quite the heat catacabeta the carne asada and the the barbacoa and it came with all the dressing that you can get and quite spicy. good flavour. just expensive if it were or not. as expensive as it were about five per taco. I would definitely favourite this spot but it's worth trying though. it's not like easy to hit up spot”

“Yummy tacos! Carne asada meat was fantastic and loved putting my own toppings on. Probably is worth it to upgrade to corn tortilla. Looks crowded but the line goes very quickly!”
