About Story Coffee
Story Coffee is a coffee shop at 15 Barley Walk in London, where signs ask customers to leave laptops and screens away so people talk to each other. The drinks list covers espresso and filter coffee. The food side runs from light bites to brunch plates such as the Turkish poached egg and the mushroom cheese toast. Basque cheesecake is among the desserts. A music playlist plays in the café throughout the day. Staff ask customers not to bring in food from elsewhere to eat on the premises.

Customer Review Summary
Coffee is the draw reviewers return to most, with filter coffee and flat whites named as regular orders, a cortado called smooth, and the latte art singled out. Brunch comes close behind, led by the Turkish poached egg and the mushroom cheese toast. One reviewer recommends the fudge brownie and basque cheesecake, and another loved the crème brûlée French roast. Several praise the friendly team and the music, and one likes the sign asking customers to put screens away so people talk to each other. The sharpest criticism concerns how strictly the outside food and drink rule is enforced. One long-time regular says his companion was told to pour a coffee bought elsewhere into a Story cup, and another customer who had bought a latte felt watched from the doorway by staff because of food from a nearby stall. One reviewer wants the beans better dialled in on the espresso machine. A cheese sandwich also arrived with almost no cheese, and it was replaced immediately with an apology.

“Nice flavoured coffee I think we had one other treat but the tables didn't look like they were wiped down and there was a part of the restaurant that looks like it should have been open but it now became an employee changing room so it's not sure that this location is delivering the vibe that people flock to. I just wish they would dial in the coffee to the La Marozzo machine and really try to perfect the flavour of the beans. It's a shame as that machine is perfe t for machine great coffee.”

“I’ve been coming to Story almost every day since at least 2021, so I don’t write this lightly. There have been various rules here over the years that I haven’t particularly liked, but I’ve never felt the need to write about this. Today changed that. My mum arrived before me to meet me. It was raining and relatively cold, and she had bought a coffee near her home before travelling over. She sat inside and explained to the staff that she was waiting for me, her son, and that once I arrived we would be ordering. Despite that, she was told she could not sit there with another café’s coffee and was asked to pour it into a Story-branded cup. I completely understand having a policy about outside food and drink. What I cannot understand is the complete lack of discretion or common sense in applying it like this. What actual commercial or economic damage was being caused? She was waiting for a customer who has been coming here almost daily for years, had explicitly said we were going to order, and we did. Even more bizarrely, pouring exactly the same coffee into a Story cup changes absolutely nothing except hiding where the coffee came from. At that point it stops feeling like a reasonable business rule and starts feeling like policing for the sake of policing. There is also context the staff could not have known. My mum has cancer and is going through difficult treatment. She does not visibly look unwell and was not asking for special treatment. She simply wanted a coffee before making the journey. I don’t blame the staff for not knowing this — but it is exactly why some basic humanity, judgement and flexibility matter in hospitality. You never know what somebody is going through. We then ordered food. My mum ordered a cheese sandwich and, when she opened it, there was almost no cheese inside. It was honestly almost comical. I took it back and, to be fair, the lady apologised and replaced it immediately, which I appreciated. But the contrast says a lot: enormous attention to which cup a customer is holding, while a basic cheese sandwich can leave the kitchen with virtually no cheese. For me, Story has increasingly started to feel more like customers are being policed than welcomed. Rules are necessary, but hospitality also requires warmth, proportion and common sense. After supporting this place for years and spending a considerable amount here, I simply don’t want to support a business that makes me and my family feel this way. There are plenty of other cafés where I would rather spend my money. That is my Story — and after years of being a loyal customer, this is where my Story era ends.”

“Food was nice! Nice atmosphere and staff also. Got the nourish bowl which was pretty varied and an almond matcha, which was decent. I’d like to come back to try the pastries”

“I had a really uncomfortable and disappointing experience at Story Coffee. I went in and purchased a latte, then sat outside at one of their tables to drink it. I also had food with me from a nearby food stall, but I was not eating it and had no intention of eating it on their premises. I was simply drinking the coffee I had just bought from them. A staff member came outside and told me I could not eat there. I explained that I was not eating anything, had purchased a coffee from them, and was only sitting outside to enjoy my drink. Rather than acknowledging the misunderstanding and moving on, the situation became uncomfortable. Staff then stood by the doorway watching me while I sat there drinking the coffee I had purchased from them. This did not feel like someone casually passing by or clearing tables. It felt deliberate and unnecessary, as though I was being monitored despite having done nothing wrong. The person I was with later went to re-enter the café to put their coffee cup in the bin, and staff took it from them before they could even go inside. Again, this made the whole experience feel unnecessarily hostile and unwelcoming. I completely understand that cafés have policies around outside food, and it is common sense that food should generally only be consumed at the establishment it was purchased from. That is exactly why I was not eating the food I had with me. I was simply drinking the coffee I had just bought from Story Coffee. So once I had explained that I was not eating and had no intention of doing so, I do not understand why staff continued to watch me as if they were waiting for me to do something wrong. There were also other people using the same outside seating area, which made the situation feel even more uncomfortable. The way this was handled made me feel singled out, unfairly judged, and unwelcome despite being a paying customer. The coffee itself was fine, but the customer service and overall experience left a very poor impression. I would not be in a rush to return.”

“They have a special sign saying no screen allowed here because they hope ppl chatting and looking at each other, rather than sitting in another office. I quite like this idea. Btw: their coffee is very nice too.”
