About Joy Cafe

Joy Cafe is a cafe at 9 Upper Tooting Rd in London, with a spacious interior and back seats styled like an old passenger carriage compartment, so groups and pairs can sit in a booth-like corner away from the main floor. The menu is fully halal and covers breakfast, brunch, lunch, desserts and drinks. Brunch includes a vegan plate with hummus and shakshuka, and hot drinks come with oat milk and other dairy alternatives. The bakery side runs from pistachio cake to croissants and brownies. The kitchen also makes bespoke cakes for weddings, birthdays and corporate events, and it supplies cakes and patisserie to other restaurants and cafes.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often point to the cakes and desserts, with fruit desserts praised for a crunchy exterior, light cream and a jammy fruit centre, and pistachio, pear and coconut cakes named alongside croissants and brownies. One reviewer got a same-day birthday cake after calling at short notice. Close behind are the breakfasts, including scrambled eggs on toast, a fresh egg brunch and a vegan brunch of hummus and shakshuka, along with an oat latte described as smooth and flavourful. Staff come up repeatedly as friendly, and two reviewers say the team remembers their order, one noting extra helpings of a favourite side. Diners describe the space as spacious, with seats at the back styled like an old passenger carriage compartment, and one says nobody rushed them at closing. The main caveats are small: one vegan diner wished for more than one vegan option, and one reviewer's husband had to go back because the bill came in under the correct amount. Another reviewer was offered ready meals, including sweet potatoes and salads, after the kitchen had closed.

“Joy Cafe delivers on its name. This place reliably makes delicious food and supports local businesses like Tolian's. They remember you and your order, which is really beautiful; I've had many a bad day where I sought comfort here, and having someone remember exactly what side you love (and pile a bit extra on!) can make all the difference.”

“I have been coming here every week for about two years now so it's about time I wrote a review. This is a cute and humble cafe with consistently good food, great cakes, and wonderful service. The woman who works Monday afternoons is always so incredibly kind and warm, without ever being imposing. She remembers my order and always makes me feel welcome. It is not as visible as some other cafe's in the area and seems to go unnoticed but I think it deserves a shout. There is free WiFi and they don't mind you working there, with good tables and a lot of seating available. Locals always rave about Joice down the road, but I find the food at Joy to be better quality and more affordable 🌟”

“We were there soon after 5 pm and the kitchen just closed, but they offered us a selection of ready meals including lovely sweet potatoes and delicious salads. Coffee was also very tasty, oat milk option was available. This place is spacious, the seats in the back reconstructing an old passenger carriage compartment give its a unique atmosphere. Toilets were clean and accessible, we were there until their closing time and noone rushed us to leave.”

“Vegan brunch is delightful! Hummus and shakshuka taste great. Our waitress Lena was very nice and attentive. Wish there was more than one vegan option”
