About The Stablehand

The Stablehand is a gastropub on Bathurst St in London, open daily, in a building that dates to 1839 and stands on a former archery range. The kitchen sets out to be the only gastro pub in London that sources every ingredient from the British Isles. Where that is not possible, it buys from places with close links to Britain, and its lemons come from Gibraltar. The menu is classic British food, with a Scotch egg as a starter and a beef and ale pie among the mains. A two-course set menu runs at lunch, alongside a lunch happy hour. Draught beer is on tap, including the house Stablehand lager. The radio plays exclusively British rock.

Customer Review Summary

Fish and chips is the dish reviewers raise most, with one calling it one of the best they have had in a pub and another ordering it for takeaway. Close behind is the scotch egg, described as perfect and very tasty, along with the chicken and leek pie, the fish pie and the scallops. A sticky doorstep dessert of chocolate cake, warm caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream draws praise, as does the house lager. Several single out the lunch set menu as great value, and a few mention the British Isles sourcing and the British rock on the radio. Criticism centres on inconsistent cooking: one diner found the egg in the scotch egg and the pastry on the beef and ale pie a little under, and another got shredded lamb stuffed into a tube after the kitchen ran out of mash for bangers and mash. One reviewer reports that their table, the only minority table nearby, was overlooked by a waitress and had to repeatedly ask for water and the bill. Elsewhere staff are called friendly, and one waiter let a guest try three small sips of each draught beer.

“The service and atmosphere were fantastic. The food, which I was hoping would impress, was just okay... The egg in the scotch egg was a little under and the pastry in the beef and ale pie was also a little under. I'd give them a second shot if I lived in the area or was here longer.”

“Had a fantastic lunch here. The scotch egg was perfect, and very tasty. The fish and chips, one of the best I've had in a pub. The set menu is incredible value for money. Lovely staff. Will be back.”

“Such delicious food and cold drinks! I had the chicken and leek pie and my husband and kids got the fish and chips and we all left stuffed and happy. It was fun that they exclusively played British rock on the radio, and we also enjoyed that their food and drink are sourced from the British Isles. I'd highly recommend this spot!”

“We stopped in during their lunch happy hour and got the best two course meals! The kitchen surprised us with how delicious it was. Such a great London / English food spot to try!”

“The food from the dinner menu was overall very good and we genuinely enjoyed the quality of the dishes. However, the service unfortunately affected our experience. Our waitress provided very minimal service to our table compared to others around us. We had to repeatedly ask for the menu, water, the bill, and even payment assistance, while she appeared attentive and responsive to the surrounding tables. It made us feel overlooked throughout the evening. As the only minority table in the area we were seated, the experience felt particularly uncomfortable and disappointing. We hope this was unintentional, but we believe all guests should receive the same level of attention and hospitality. That said, compliments to the kitchen for the food, which was enjoyable.”

Good to know

“Welcome to The Stablehand Built in 1839 on an old archery range, this pub quickly became a cherished neighbourhood meeting spot for residents looking to catch up with friends over a pint, and was frequented by notable locals throughout its history, from Winston Churchill to Tony Blair. To honour the historical roots of the establishment, we are excited to introduce our take on the quintessential British gastro pub. We aim to be London’s only gastro pub sourcing all of our ingredients from the British Isles, and where that is not possible, we look to source ingredients from countries and territories with close links to Britain, such as our lemons from Gibraltar.”
