About The Old Dispensary

The Old Dispensary is an Irish pub in London at 325 Camberwell New Rd, with tables made from barrels, Irish decor and memorabilia, snugs and nooks, and a small stage. Guinness is on tap alongside IPAs, cider and a range of whiskeys, and Blue Moon Belgian White is on the beer list. Live Irish music plays on Sundays, local student bands perform on Mondays and Wednesdays, and some weekends bring DJs and local bands. Live sports are shown, including GAA, and chess and Jenga are available for anyone who wants a game. Dogs are welcome. The pub is open every night until late, which suits a late-night drink, and Denmark Hill station is a short walk away.

Customer Review Summary

Guinness draws the most praise here, with reviewers calling the pint excellent, well kept and great, and one also noting an excellent range of whiskeys. Live music comes close behind. Reviewers describe Irish sessions on Sundays, local student bands on Mondays and Wednesdays, DJs and bands some weekends, and an Elvis tribute act, all in a cozy room with snugs and a tiny stage. Chess and Jenga add to the relaxed feel, and several mention a friendly barman and a broad, unpretentious mix of customers. The room is described as calm and contemplative when quiet and lively when busy. The main complaint comes from one reviewer who finds the music too loud when a band plays and the drinks on tap limited, mostly random ales, though another lists apple cider and rotating IPAs alongside the Guinness. Another reviewer says the sound tech worked hard to get the best sound possible out of that small stage.

“Lovely little venue. Tiny stage, but loads of atmosphere. And the sound tech really worked hard to get the best sound they could.”

“Solid venue right at the crossroads, especially for live music — Sundays (Irish), plus Mondays and Wednesdays when local student bands bring a louder, lively vibe. The best part is the broad mix of customers; it has a proper, unpretentious feel. (mainly lefty Gen Z) Beers on tap include Guinness, apple cider, and a rotating selection of IPAs. You can also play chess, Jenga, etc., which adds to the relaxed atmosphere. Great location overall, with seating out on the high street and a small smoking area at the back (around 10 sqm). The toilets are decent and fit the character of the place. Open till 1am daily.”

“It's a decent place but I would say when there is a band the music tends to be too loud and the range of drinks on tap is quite limited and it's mostly random ales.”

“had a amazing time here, service and everything between was exemplary. A real stand out of the locals and a fantastic experience- Joe highlighted the evening, welcoming forward and kind. I would recommend to anyone that comes across the pub”

“When quiet this place is great for a calm contemplative drink, a game and a chat. When busy, great for a lively drink and to chat nonsense. Good find - great Guinness.”
