About The Tankard
The Tankard is an Irish-themed pub in London, set in a mock Tudor building on a corner of Walworth Road at number 178, a short walk from Elephant & Castle Tube. Visiting musicians perform traditional Irish music, and the pub has been refurbished. Inside, wood panelling and a stripped wood floor frame a single bar. The bar serves lagers, with no real ales or craft beers, and staff bring Guinness to the table. No food or coffee is served, so the focus stays on drinks. Televisions show sport, including football and horse racing, and pool is there for anyone who wants a game with a pint. The pub opens daily.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return for the cheap pints of Heineken, with one also citing Madri, and a regular says prices have held for a couple of years. Close behind is the traditional local feel: an Irish landlord chatting at every table, a barmaid who remembers orders, Guinness brought to the table, and musicians who turned up to play traditional Irish music. Diners also mention sport on the televisions, especially football and horse racing, outdoor seating, a friendly dog, and a welcome for dogs and kids. The lagers get praise, though reviewers note there are no real ales or craft beers, and no food or coffee. Complaints are sharper but less common. One reviewer describes the bartender shouting at customers and ejecting people for not buying another round the moment a glass was empty. Another calls the pub old and tired, wanting more light and a scrub of the floors, and one reports dried vomit on the toilet hand dryers. Still, a group of Scouse visitors say they were made to feel welcome, and another reviewer recalls a funny moment over a Barbie Bomb.

“I love this pub because it’s an honest boozer the likes of which are dying out left right and centre No food, no coffee but everybody’s welcome bring dogs kids etc. A real pub should be like an extension of your living room and the tankard gets that. I make a special trip whenever I’m in London to come here and drink some of their £5 pints of Heineken lager. Yes, that’s right folks five quid for a pint of Heineken in London as of March 2025 I’ve been coming here for a couple of years and prices haven’t risen so far as I know. I respect that. Last time I was in there, some musicians turned up and started playing some traditional Irish music. If the idea was that kind of stuff gets people to drink more, it worked. In this corporate world of Gastro pubs which are glorified restaurants with a bar it’s refreshing to see establishments like this. I hope the owners are reading my comment and I hope they never change anything”

“A truly unpretentious local pub. Even the hand dryers in the toilets had dried vomit”

“Nice little traditional community pub, the kind of place where the barmaid remembers your order and you can chat to the other customers if you want. Decent prices too.”

“🚇 Elephant & Castle 🍺 £5.00 Heineken ❤️ A friendly locals pub on busy Walworth Road. . Today I was out and about in Walworth to explore the pubs of this manor for the first time. First stop was here at The Tankard which is just a short walk from Elephant & Castle Tube. This Mock Tudor pub is situated on a corner plot on Walworth Road and is easy to find. . I arrived just after 12pm and the pub was fairly quiet with about six people in attendance. I ordered a pint and was served by the Irish Guvnor who was chatting to some of the locals who were propping up the bar, then I pulled up a pew and took stock of what this boozer is all about. . This is a one bar pub which is a good size which was clean, tidy and simply decorated. There is wood panelling cladding the walls, a stripped wood floor and leaded windows, there are also a couple of pictures of horses, it wouldn’t be an Irish pub without these. If you like your sport there are three TV’s showing live sport, I managed to catch a bit of the Leicester v Leeds game which was on at the time. . The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, even though I was a new face in here there was friendly eye contact and you could tell everyone was a local judging by all the interactions. The Guvnor was equally friendly, he was collecting glasses around the tables and took time to chat to people at every table, a true hallmark of a proper landlord and it is rare to see this these days. . The Tankard in Walworth is a proper oldschool Irish pub full of local patrons who are well looked after. It was great to see a proper Guvnor in full flow looking after his punters and showing that personal touch. I felt welcome here even though I’m not a regular, it’s obvious that the Guvnor has set the tone here and has a good crowd. If you fancy a traditional pub experience, you must give The Tankard a go. 📊 Information correct on visiting 21/02/22 If you want to see all my pub reviews in one place, head to @londonpubmap on Instagram. 🍻”
