About The Black Lion
The Black Lion is a Victorian pub in West Hampstead, London, on W End Ln, with ornate ceilings and period features. Live music and a quiz night give the pub a programme of events beyond the bar. The kitchen serves a Sunday roast with lamb, and a sausage roll is also on the food offering. Kitchen and bar staff accommodate gluten free alternatives and allergy requests. Dogs are welcome, and England World Cup matches are shown for anyone who wants to watch. The pub takes group bookings, including a specialised menu for a Christmas work event.

Customer Review Summary
The criticism is narrower but specific. One reviewer found the fish and chips mediocre with plain batter, and was charged the full double price for a gin and tonic after expecting a promotional price, with staff declining to adjust it. Another called a sausage roll small for its price and described a bartender as condescending when asked about the fried chicken and the bathroom. Several returning diners mention the refurbishment looking great.

“Excellent! I came for Sunday roast with a friend. The kitchen and bar staff were excellent at accommodating gluten free alternatives. Nalin, the chef, made sure everything was perfect. Great atmosphere and great service. And I’ve just returned after the refurb and the place looks great!”

“Truly so impressed and thankful for this local gem! I’ve never had a bad meal at The Black Lion - in fact the food is exceptional with a wide variety on the menu, there’s something for everyone. Last Friday we were served by the most charming barmaid and so thankful for her recommendations, personally having tried the incredible sausage roll and tomato soup - so glad we ordered these! Both fantastic. It does an incredible roast and really enjoy the quiz and the live music too. Look out for the renovation coming soon! We’ll be back thank you so much Black Lion team. Really good work!”

“Visiting our children who share a flat nesrby we were seeking a pub that was dog friendly had good grub and decent beer/wine. What a great find this place is in an ideal location & walkable. We will definitely use the Black Lion again when visiting. Great staff, really efficient, friendly and engaging.”

“Lovely place if you are looking to not go into central London. Was really busy but could still have conversations with the rest of the group all night. Food was outstanding and the service even more so. We had a few allergies in the group and they were very accommodating with our food order. Highly recommend!”

“we had a really bad experience here. first off the food portion is small as you can see in the picture, that is a 7.7 pounds sausage roll. Secondly, the bartender is very condescending and rude to us. There was no line and no reason to be stressed. However, he seemed very annoyed that I asked how many pieces the fried chicken are and where the bathroom is. We didnt feel welcomed here.”
