About Brucefield Farm

On Rutherford Square in Livingston, Brucefield Farm is a pub open daily, set in a farm setting with a carvery counter where a chef carves the meats. The carvery runs seven days a week, with Sunday roast-style dinners, and comes with roast potatoes, vegetables, cauliflower cheese and gravy. The menu also lists a ham hock and cheese pie and a mushroom pie, and customers add the potatoes, veg and gravy themselves. Breakfast is served too, and food is ordered at the bar or counter. For younger diners, a children's ice cream area with toppings sits alongside the main meal.

Customer Review Summary

The carvery draws the most praise, with reviewers describing fresh, tasty roasts, roast potatoes crispy outside and fluffy inside, and cauliflower cheese alongside vegetables with just enough bite. Close behind, diners mention a ham hock and cheese pie of surprising size, a good pizza, battered fish and chips, a mushroom pie, and a breakfast with a well-made mocha. Friendly staff come up repeatedly. A few call the restaurant a bit tired, while another describes the setting as historic and peaceful. The criticism is substantial and centers on service and the carvery itself. One reviewer was told the kitchen was closing earlier than the listed hours, then found the carvery rock hard and unevenly salted, with tiny garlic bread. A family said the counter staff seemed uninterested and replied that they should have asked when questioned about a kids offer and a dessert option. Another reviewer reports burnt pigs in blankets and feeling unwell afterward. Even so, one diner describes a carvery chef going out of his way to cut crispy bits off the meat on request.

“I visited for a carvery and was absolutely not disappointed! From the moment we arrived, we were greeted by the loveliest waitress, Lucy, who immediately made us feel so welcome. She was incredibly friendly, attentive and genuinely went above and beyond to make sure we had a wonderful experience. She took the time to walk us through everything, was so warm and cheerful throughout, and made us feel completely looked after. You could tell that she genuinely cared about giving customers a great experience, and she really did brighten my day. Lucy is an absolute credit to the place and a real asset to the team. Staff who are this welcoming, enthusiastic and genuinely lovely can make such a difference to a visit, and she absolutely did that for us. I really hope her hard work and fantastic customer service are recognised because she deserves every bit of praise! The food was absolutely incredible — honestly, I’m still dreaming about it! Everything was delicious, beautifully prepared and exactly what you want from a carvery. The decor was also lovely, with such a calm, comfortable and inviting atmosphere that made it a really enjoyable place to spend time. A huge thank you to Lucy for making our visit so special. Fantastic food, beautiful surroundings and exceptional service. We’ll definitely be back! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️”

“The staff were so friendly, polite. The dinners were great. 1 x carvery, 1 X salad and 1 x Frank burger. Starters were very yummy too. The restaurant itself is a bit tired, but absolutely no reflection on the lovely staff and food. Thank you”

“For around £12 you get a two course Christmas type dinner with the pudding of your choice, we had a meal from the carvery, battered fish and chips and a mushroom pie meal, all arrived hot. A great stop over on our journey. We saw only 2 staff who were cleaning tables serving drinks, taking and delivering your orders.”

“£40+ to be rushed and stared at. We walked in to a disinterested member of staff, she advised that we had 5 minutes to order otherwise the kitchen would close. We checked opening times and saw they did not close until 21:00 but we were being told at 19:40 that they were closing and we had 5 minutes to order food at the bar. We quickly decided what we wanted and ordered at the bar. We got 2 carveries, 2 starters and a pizza with drinks. When ordering the drinks they advised the entire machine was down and we could get bottled drinks or water. We were told to either get the carvery then or they would put it away and we wouldn’t get the carvery, this completely disregarding the starters we had ordered. The chef at the carvery was nice enough but all staff just talked amongst themselves and ignored the majority of customers. The carvery was rock hard and simultaneously undersalted and oversalted. It was playing roulette with the food. Halfway through the carvery, the starters came out. The garlic bread was tiny and looked more like chicken breast than anything else. The garlic was incredibly harsh and too heavy to be nice. The pizza was the only redeeming part, it was good. We saw 2-3 groups of people turned away between 19:45-20:00 so I can only imagine how much money is being lost by rude staff who sighed everyone time she saw someone walk towards the door.”

“Visited on 29/05 and had rather poor experience in terms of service. This isn’t reflecting all the staff but the lady at the counter who gave us the table and took our order didn’t seem ‘interested’. Visited as a family of 3 with a kid but kids menu wasn’t offered initially. We had to ask for it when we were ready to order and a minute later, we realised there was a ‘kids eat for £1’ offer on Fridays. When we checked, we were told “you should have asked’”. Again, we noticed the kids meal we selected had a dessert option..When asked we were told “you should have mentioned when ordering”. Well, we were customers at the restaurant and the staff are supposed to help. Customers don’t learn the menu and take an exam on t&cs before going to a restaurant ! There were couple of other staff who seemed helpful and making an effort but the lady whom we interacted with spoilt our evening. Food was fine & decent value for money. The staff in question need a refresher course on customer service ! Do not think we would consider going there soon.”
