About Rowan Tree

Rowan Tree is a pub in Bathgate on Southdale Wy, built around a children's play area, a stone-baked pizza kitchen and a conservatory. The pizza kitchen sits alongside a main menu and a specials board, where the steak and ale pie is one of the pub dishes. Burgers come in chicken, beef and cheeseburger versions, each served with chips. Orders can be placed through an app at the table, and claw machines give children something else to do between courses. Dogs are welcome, with dog-friendly tables that can be booked in advance. Tables in general can also be reserved ahead, so a group can settle on a spot in the dining area or the conservatory.

Customer Review Summary

Burgers draw the most mentions, with reviewers praising a chicken burger with crispy-outside, fluffy-inside chips and a beef burger, though one diner's son found the cheeseburger just ok. Close behind are a chocolate orange sponge served warm with custard, a steak and ale pie and a vegan meal described as fantastic, with food often arriving hot and quickly. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and attentive, and dogs are made welcome. Families point to the play area and the claw machines, and several call the meals good value. The criticism is most detailed in a roast dinner review: mushy or hard vegetables, overcooked Yorkshire puddings, a chocolate cake cold in places and hot in others with a nearly curdled sauce, and a long wait for plates to be cleared in a mostly empty pub. Another reviewer was disappointed that Pedigree Ale was replaced with a very light ale. Even with ordering through the app, one diner noted a staff member still came over to ask if anything else was needed.

“Really enjoyed our visit to the Rowan Tree Armadale yesterday. The food was fantastic, the atmosphere was lovely, and the whole place was spotlessly clean. The service was excellent too, friendly, attentive and welcoming. Overall, a great experience and somewhere we’d definitely be happy to visit again. Highly recommended.”

“Food was mid, it was fine but I wouldn’t be returning in a rush. The vegetables were either mushy or hard. Meat fell apart but not in a good way, seemed overcooked Roast potatoes were really good Yorkshire puddings were overcooked Chocolate cake was cold in places and hot in others, the sauce that came with it was almost curdled when it arrived. Ice cream was good The pub was mostly empty however I was put in a corner with a large curtain that wouldn’t move I saw staff moving various customers as they had not booked seats but no one arrived to sit in those seats. Staff did not check on anyone when eating and took a long time to clear plates. As stated the pub was not packed. I waited for around 20 mins for dessert to be cleared and had to go to the bar to get the bill.”

“My wife and I popped in for lunch at the Rowan Tree in Armadale expecting a simple pub grub experience. We were blown away by the standard of food, but even more so by the staff. They were friendly, welcoming and nonstop! The woman who seemed to be the manager, was attentive and polite to everyone who came in. And from hearing other tables, no request was too much for her or her staff! Brilliant experience, we’re already looking forward to our next visit!”
