Customer Review Summary
Sunday roasts draw the most mentions, with reviewers praising the huge Yorkshire puddings, the lamb rump roast, and a gluten-free Sunday lunch served with cauliflower cheese. The kids' roasts are called great value. Close behind, the fish and chips are described as absolutely to die for, and the scotch egg, tomahawk pork and a ground rump burger also earn praise. Themed evenings, including a French night with paired wines, come up too, and a few mention returning for breakfast. Staff are repeatedly called lovely and welcoming without being overbearing, and the garden and outdoor seating get compliments. The complaints are specific. One diner was told the roast pork came with crackling, yet it arrived as the soft, jelly-like layer rather than hard and crispy. Another reviewer reports a sharp piece of plastic in an ice cream, and one notes service was a bit slow at times. Among the small touches reviewers mention, staff brought a bowl of water out for a family's dogs.

“We had a great family lunch at The Five Bells! It is a wonderful, reasonably priced local pub with a very welcoming atmosphere, though one detail on the food kept it from being a perfect 5 stars. The Food:The food was incredibly fresh, delicious, and very filling. The Sunday roasts came out beautifully with huge Yorkshire puddings and fresh vegetables. However, my only downside was the roast pork. I chose this option specifically because I love crackling and even asked the staff beforehand if it came with some. I was told it would, but unfortunately, it wasn't hard, crispy crackling at all—it was just the soft, jelly-like part on top. Since that crackling was the main reason I chose the dish, it was a bit disappointing.Atmosphere & Amenities:Great Outdoor Space: They have a lovely, spacious outdoor area where you can relax. It's completely pet-friendly, and they even kindly provided a bowl of water for our animals. There is also a designated space if you want to smoke outside.Service: The staff were polite, attentive, and very welcoming throughout our meal.Parking: The large on-site car park is free, which makes visiting entirely stress-free.A Quick Tip: While the system highly recommends making reservations (and we booked ahead), it was actually quite empty and quiet when we arrived—likely because it was such a beautiful, nice sunny day.Overall, a great family pub with excellent value, but hopefully, they can get that pork crackling crispier next time!”

“They said ‘you’ll never see a burger on our menu’ but they caved due to popular demand and today we finally got a chance to sample it. I’m not sure why they put this off for so long because it was spectacular! It looked like a simple burger but it wasn’t. Ground rump with caramelized onion and I think owner said there was red wine in there somewhere, made into a patty then grilled to perfection on a toasted bun with melted cheese and burger sauce with a side of fries. We will definitely go for another one soon. Two burgers and fries with two ciders £48. Happy, happy. 😊”

““Lovely atmosphere with friendly staff and excellent food. The fish and chips are absolutely to die for. Nice outdoor seating area and plenty going on close by. Been twice now and loved it both times.”

“Recommended by a colleague and it didn't dissapoint. The quality of the food was fabulous (we had lamb chump and other than the thin edge there wasn't an ounce of fat on it. There were 3 generous slices each being about 8mm thick.). Everything was as expected but great value for money considering the portion sizes. The dessert menu didn't have the largest choice but despite not being a dessert person what I chose was delicious. Can't wait to visit there again. Look out for special events there too! I also hear the breakfast is of similar quality, so that's on my list too!”

“After living locally for almost 20 years, I finally made it to The Five Bells in Stanbridge — and I honestly can’t believe it took me so long. I booked a dinner for their French evening and mon dieu… it was absolutely magnifique. One of the nicest meals I’ve had in a long time. The paired wines were spot on, the atmosphere was beautifully relaxed, and the staff were genuinely lovely and attentive without being overbearing. It made for such a special evening — helped, of course, by the best company 💕 I’ll definitely be returning… and I certainly won’t be leaving it another 20 years next time!”
