About Emre Smokehouse & Grill

Emre Smokehouse & Grill is a steak house in Leicester, set in a Grade II listed former church building on St Barnabas Rd, where the original architectural features have been kept. The beef is halal and British, hand butchered, dry aged for a minimum of 28 days and grilled over coal flames. Diners choose their cut at a counter, and the chef cooks the steak live in front of them. Picanha is among the steaks, and the smoked side of the menu includes smoked short rib. Emre cheese meatballs and loaded fries are also on the menu, with a choice of sauces for the fries. Waterfalls and decorative lighting feature in the dining area. Reservations are required. No alcohol is served, so the drinks list is mocktails such as Fraise, passion and pina colada.

Customer Review Summary

Steak draws the most praise, with reviewers singling out the Black Angus with peppercorn sauce, a T-bone with mustard marination and tender, juicy lamb chops. One family loved watching the chef cook their steak live. Close behind is the converted old church, described as stunning, with waterfalls and original features, along with staff called polite, friendly and welcoming. Fuji fries, the smoked short rib, the starters and the fraise mocktail also earn mentions. The most repeated complaint is a mandatory 10% service charge for groups of ten or more, raised by three reviewers who found it off-putting. Food criticism is more scattered: loaded fries with little meat, dry hummus, burnt and dry cheese meatballs, and one diner who found two steaks too greasy and fatty to cut, plus a warm pina colada mocktail that was half whipped cream. That same diner found the room very hot despite the air conditioning. Staff waived the service charge with an apology when it was raised, and when one steak arrived overcooked, a replacement came out within minutes.

“Food was amazing. Service was beyond amazing. Brother Umar served us. Initially there was an issue with the Steak being overcooked but it was corrected within minutes- a new steak brought out, insisted from the chef- although I was ok with having the initial steak. Service was great, the staff looked as if they wanted to be there and was happy working at Emre. The environment was very postive. Umar had gone above and beyond for us and despite Emre being a busy restaurant, it was also a well oiled machine. Definitely will come here again.”

“Visited as it was a highly recommended restaurants from friends Unfortunately was very disappointed with the experience. I initially called about their weekday menu which the staff confirmed runs from Monday to Thursday. But when I actually went, they said they stopped the menu - despite the staff member telling me on the phone it is still on. The waiter simply just said that they don't know who I spoke to. But anyway, we move on A hot day, the staff saying the AC is on, but still felt very hot, to the point where ourselves and other customers were fanning themselves using the menu or other bits. Very disappointed about this from a place which has such a high end place Then comes onto the food. We ordered loaded chips for starters, and our mains were the picanha steak and lamb shank meals as well as the pina collada mocktail Unfortunately the pina collada arrived warm despite having ice in it. And the actual amount of drink was less than half of the cup?? The remainder was whipped cream (you can. Probably see the line where the drink meets the ice/cream in the pic). Charging £8 for half a cup of whipped cream and half a cup of warm drink on a summers day is absolute robbery The loaded fries we found very greasy, with the ratio of chips to actual meat being very high. So again, disappointed by this. With the mains, the lamb shank was decent. However, let's not get started on the steak. Steak arrived to us and was very greasy, and there was so much fat on it that we were unable to cut through it using the knife. The waiter saw us struggle with this and said it was because we ordered Medium-well rather than Medium and offered to change the steak as there was barely any meat, and was not able to cut through it. So we went ahead and swapped it for a sirloin steak which had more meat. However, by this time, my wife had finished with her lamb shank and it was only me eating. The steak was very greasy again. The experience was just not enjoyable due to the delays, the quality of food and the heat. We wanted to get dessert but decided against this as we just wanted to get out of the place due to the heat. Overall, very disappointed with this experience in a 'high end' restaurant. The service was good, but the food itself I was very disappointed with”

“We had an amazing experience at Emre Steakhouse in Leicester! The restaurant is set inside a beautifully converted old church, and the original features create a stunning atmosphere that’s both unique and full of character. From the moment we arrived, the staff were welcoming and incredibly accommodating. As a family with a pushchair, they made sure we had plenty of space and seated us comfortably, which made a big difference. The food was absolutely delicious, and the highlight of the evening was having the chef cook our steak live right in front of us. It was a fantastic experience to watch, and the steak was cooked to perfection—full of flavour and beautifully presented. The combination of excellent food, great service, and a family-friendly atmosphere makes this a place we’ll definitely be returning to. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a quality steakhouse in Leicester!”

“Visited Emre for my birthday after a day out in Leicester. Wanted a small meal- we chose the smoked brisket and the emre burger, as well as passion and Fraise mocktails. Honestly I was so impressed with everything how clean the place was, how amazing the food was. But the thing that amazed me the most was the attentiveness of each and every staff member! They all were so polite, friendly and humorous too, made the experience so much nicer! Cant wait to visit again! Literally couldnt fault it!”

“Walking up to Emres on St Barnabas Road, I genuinely thought my eyes had betrayed me. From the outside, I was preparing myself for a quick “eat and leave” situation… then the doors opened and suddenly I felt like I’d walked into a palace! Waterfalls, classy decor, beautiful lighting I nearly checked if I needed a passport to enter the dining area. The transformation from outside to inside needs to be studied by scientists. Now onto the food… absolutely unreal. I had the T-bone with mustard marination, the rib shack, and lamb chops. Every single bite was packed with flavour. The lamb chops were tender, juicy, and cooked perfectly. The steak was spot on proper quality meat with seasoning that actually tastes like someone in the kitchen cares. Even after trying to be picky, I genuinely couldn’t find faults. Service was great, atmosphere was amazing, and the whole place completely exceeded expectations. One minute you’re outside thinking “hmmm” next minute you’re inside feeling like royalty eating steak next to waterfalls. Definitely coming back.”
