About Black Iron
Black Iron is a steak house in Leicester, set inside Winstanley House on Hinckley Rd, a Georgian grade II listed hotel in parkland that also hosts weddings and functions. A charcoal-fired oven anchors the kitchen, and the steak menu includes a 10oz sirloin and a porterhouse special. Skin-on fries and maple-covered root vegetables come as sides. The team explains the different cuts of beef and how the beef is reared. Black Iron runs as a separate restaurant within the Winstanley Hotel complex and is open daily. Afternoon tea is also served, with choices pre-selected online at the time of booking and bottomless coffee included.

Customer Review Summary
Steak draws the most praise at this restaurant, with a 10oz sirloin with chimichurri and steaks cooked to the diner's liking singled out, and one reviewer noting a neighbouring table's porterhouse special. Skin-on fries and maple root vegetables are called delicious sides, and one diner praised the staff's knowledge of the cuts and how the beef is reared. Close behind is the afternoon tea, described as freshly prepared and well presented, with easy online booking. Service is repeatedly called excellent, and several visited for birthdays and anniversaries. The complaints are few but specific. The herb-crusted hake came with so much white sauce that the clams were hard to find, one found the dining room a bit chilly, and one wished for a carafe with the bottomless coffee. A disabled-badge holder felt the badge check was not discreet and was asked to move the car after struggling to get out. One anniversary couple were given a free drink and later a plate celebrating the occasion.

“We absolutely loved the whole experience! It was a spectacular evening!! We will be going back!! Great atmosphere, great knowledge on the different cuts and how the beef is reared. Outstanding service also. Would highly recommend and can’t wait to go back.”

“Our first visit to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary. The staff team in the hotel reception & restaurant were extremely warm & welcoming. Everything was explained, nothing was too much trouble. The food was delicious and the service very good. Leo was our main server, he was professional, efficient, with the right degree of friendliness. I didn't get the name of the staff member that showed us to our table and get our drinks, but he was also extremely good. My only gripe is: We parked at the front of the hotel as both my husband & I have disabled badges. This was checked, not discreetly, and after I struggled to get out of the car I was then asked reposition the car by around one foot. He could have asked before I alighted the car. When we left I noticed another car parked in a disabled spot with no badge. The difference was that it was a Bently, we've got an old Volvo. The prices inside are the same for everyone I believe. Apart from that, an extremely enjoyable meal. We will definitely be back. Thank you.”

“I went by myself as it was my last day in Leicester and I was not going to miss the afternoon tea experience here. The only thing I wish was different was I feel I should have been given a carafe since it was bottomless coffee but that’s ok. The presentation and everything was delightful”

“My wife and I visited the restaurant for our wedding anniversary. I mentioned this when booking and it was lovely that our server was aware of it, congratulating us and offering a free drink. He also later gave us a’gift’ of a plate celebrating our anniversary. These are the kind of things that make an evening out more memorable. Our server was excellent throughout. The food was absolutely gorgeous and the setting / decor also played their part in a great evening. It may have been our first visit but I am sure, not our last!”

“Absolute hidden gem! Was recommended to us by family and didn’t disappoint. It’s an odd location but you would never know where you are once you’re there. There was both a wedding and a function on whilst we were there and other than seeing a wedding set up (which looked stunning) outside there was no affect on our visit at all! The food was absolutely beautiful and the couple on the table next to us had the porterhouse special which was amazing! So we will be returning to have a go at that . Our server Jake was great, accommodating and helpful and you could see all the staff working very hard but not faltering at all in the service provided. Can’t wait to come back!”

Good to know
“Tucked away in leafy parkland at Winstanley House, an imposing Georgian grade II listed hotel and venue, Black Iron prides itself on our amazing team, great food and drink and faultless surroundings. The centrepiece of Black Iron is our charcoal-fired oven, which treats the premium produce on offer with the first-class cooking method it deserves. Our locally sourced dishes harken back to the way food used to be prepared; cooking over fire is a primitive technique that lets our top-quality ingredients speak for themselves. Serving award winning lunch, dinner, brunch, afternoon tea and Sunday roasts. Recently voted Best Steak house in the midlands at the MFDHA 2025.”
