Quick info
About Oriental City
Oriental City is a dim sum restaurant on Cross Stamford St in Leeds, attached to a large Asian food market, so a meal can sit alongside a visit to the Chinese supermarket. The dining room has a dark-wood, antique-style interior, and a stage bears the Chinese wedding character. The dim sum menu follows the Guangdong and Hong Kong style and runs until late afternoon, with prawn dumplings and har gow among the choices. Two separate all-day menus sit beside it. One is a traditional Chinese menu that includes Beijing roast duck, and the other is a Chinese-style menu adapted to western tastes. That gives groups with mixed preferences a choice of approach at the same table. The restaurant opens daily.

Customer Review Summary
Dim sum is the draw here, and the prawn dumplings come up most, with reviewers describing a very thin skin around a large, juicy prawn. Close behind are the prawn chive dumplings, cuttlefish dumpling, pork and prawn dumplings, and chicken and mushroom rice, plus fresh jasmine tea. Reviewers also describe the dark wood, nostalgic dining room as busy and bustling, and several call the portions generous and the pricing reasonable. A few found the fried squid greasy and the Shanghai meat bun missing its soup.

“Lovely food! Great service, really reasonable pricing too, lots of options to choose from. Would definitely visit again”

“Good food, customer service needs to be better. I was videoing the restaurant and one lady said “Why are you video recording?!” I said it’s my first time here so she let go of the matter. She was rude but not rude if you know what I mean. Anyway, the food is great, great atmosphere, and there’s plenty of seating inside the restaurant. The car park outside is a tad small. You’ll be lucky if you get a space.”

“I recently visited Oriental City for the first time. The restaurant itself is clean, nicely presented, and the food was decent, which is why it’s disappointing that the service let the experience down so badly. From the moment we sat down, the staff seemed impatient and unwelcoming. We had barely opened the menu before being repeatedly asked what drinks we wanted. When we tried to ask a few questions about the menu, the waitress came across as abrupt and dismissive, repeatedly asking, “Are you ready to order?” and “What do you want?” rather than helping us with our questions. What made it more noticeable was that the same staff member appeared much friendlier and more attentive to another table, who for context were of a Chinese background, while our interactions felt cold and uncomfortable throughout the meal. Another waiter checked whether our food was okay, but overall there was very little sense of customer service. The experience ended on a similarly negative note when we asked for the bill. The total was shouted at us, and we were repeatedly asked how we were paying before we’d even had a chance to look at the bill. I took the receipt of her to look at it. It all felt rushed and unnecessarily hostile. The food was perfectly acceptable, but for me, good food alone isn’t enough when the service makes you feel unwelcome. There are other Chinese restaurants nearby, such as Mr Su’s, where I’ve found the atmosphere and professionalism to be much better. Unfortunately, because of the poor customer service and horrible attitude from the staff, I wouldn’t recommend returning. Customer service goes a long way and I can see why the resturant was almost empty!”

“This was our 1st visit to Oriental City! It was very busy when we arrived (Father's Day) but we were seated after a short wait. The restaurant is much busier than expected. Our group all selected dishes from the Dim Sum menu. All arrived very quickly and was very tasty. There is an overflow car park if the one outside is full/busy.”

“The customer service was extremely disappointing. When we arrived, we stood at the front waiting area for at least five minutes while multiple staff walked past us without acknowledging us — no greeting, no smile, nothing. We eventually had to ask for a table ourselves. Once seated, we were handed menus with no offer of drinks. After 20 minutes of no service, we had to ask for tea ourselves, which then took another 20 minutes to arrive. It also took more effort to flag someone down just to place our food order. To be fair, the staff member who eventually took our order was polite and apologised for how busy it was. But the food then took around 50 minutes to arrive, with no one checking on our table. Our teapot lid was left open — a sign in Chinese culture that we wanted a refill — but it was ignored. Thankfully, the food was nice, but overall customer care was very poor. We will not be returning. G-Woo at the other end of Leeds is far superior — attentive, friendly, and consistent service whether busy or quiet. That’s real customer care.”
