About La Taberna Leeds

La Taberna Leeds is a family-run tapas restaurant at 16 York Pl in Leeds, where the team speaks Spanish. The menu is built from small plates across meat, seafood and vegetarian dishes, so diners combine several plates to make a meal. Crispy fried aubergine fritters arrive with a sweet cinnamon sauce, and the chorizo is cooked in red wine. Sangria and wine make up the drinks list. The staff know the ingredients in each dish and advise on allergens and gluten free options. The restaurant opens Tuesday to Saturday and is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often single out the aubergine fritters, described as crispy and covered in a sweet cinnamon sauce, with one reviewer saying they would return just to order them. Chorizo comes close behind, whether cooked in red wine or served with steak, alongside Manchego, croquettes, skewers, tortilla and iberico ham. One reviewer found the chicken rolls stuffed with rum cooked raisins unique and moreish. Several mention the sangria, the welcoming, Spanish-speaking staff, and servers who knew what was in each dish when asked about allergies and gluten free options. Complaints are fewer but specific. One reviewer found the sardines full of bones, another says the food does not always come together, and another noticed an off-putting smell near the toilets. One anniversary diner reports being seated on a high stool by the bar despite a month-old booking, then receiving warmed-up patatas bravas with no tomato sauce and burnt chorizo, and being shouted at by a manager. One reviewer adds that several dishes per person are needed to feel full. Another reviewer's waiter suggested a cocktail bar for after dinner.

“Fantastic tapas restaurant that we’d definitely recommend. We ordered six dishes between the two of us, which was just a little too much to finish! Our favourite was the chorizo, although the Manchego cheese, croquettes and skewers all came a very close second. Everything was delicious, fresh and full of flavour. The service was excellent too. Our waiter was friendly and attentive, and even recommended the cocktail bar Below Stairs for after dinner. We took his advice and loved it – the cocktails were really original and a refreshing change from the usual classics. A great meal, great service and a brilliant recommendation for a cocktail bar. If we lived in Leeds, we’d definitely be regulars!”

“The food was good and the prices are reasonable too. The staff and atmosphere were very welcoming. We were recommended the chorizo cooked in red wine. It was definitely one of the better dishes. The food doesn't always come together. Irrespective of that, we still enjoyed the food.”

“My boyfriend and I visited La Taberna before going to a show in Leeds. We were looking for somewhere with lots of gluten free options and that would be suitable for allergies. The staff were amazing with my allergies and dietary restrictions, they knew exactly what was in each dish and could advise on what was safe and what wasn’t. The lovely waitress who served us said that they do their best to minimise allergen ingredients in their dishes, which was brilliant to hear. Not only we were impressed by their allergy awareness, but the food was delicious. We’ll definitely be returning!”

“The menu has a good range of dishes from seafood to red meat and vegetarian options. Presentation of the dishes was good and portion sizes per dish were decent for tapas. That being said if you are not familiar with tapas, you will need to order several dishes for multiple people to eat and be full. One person would need to have at least two dishes to themselves to feel full. Had a few dishes including the rollos de pollo, beef meatballs and mixed veg. Everything was well seasoned. The rollos de pollos were the most interesting dish of chicken rolls stuffed with rum cooked raisins in a tomato based sauce. The flavour was unique and moreish. I also tried the sardines which tasted fresh but be warned there were lots of bones which made them difficult to eat. The star of the show was the crispy fried aubergines, covered in a delightful sweet cinnamon sauce. I would back go and just order that to be honest. Price wise - it's a bit pricey and you'd need to be strategic about what you get, but I would go again.”
