Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often fault the fish and chips, describing soggy, oily batter around a small piece of fish sold as a large and chips that are dry, dark or taste of rancid oil. Several say the food seems to sit under the light or be cooked in batches, and longtime customers say quality has dropped from what they remember. The chicken sandwich splits opinion: one reviewer finds it big and crunchy, another says it arrived as a processed chicken patty instead of diced fried chicken. The same reviewer reports mould specks on a can of pop. One reviewer describes food poisoning after a fish order. Staff are called polite and accommodating, and one diner who found the small fish and chips more than enough also noted how cheap it was compared with Cumbria. One reviewer says the owner told them potato scallops are strictly a Manchester thing and that no Leeds chippy serves them.

“I used to use Cantors in the 80's when it was just selling fish and chips and fried chicken BEFORE it started doing kebabs and everything else and before they started using cheaper and cheaper ingredients causing the quality to go down. Both the fish and chips AND the fried chicken were lovely, they always used quality ingredients, it was always cooked to perfection and i never had a bad meal from them. Then in the late 90's I moved from the area and hadn't used Cantors for years until I was driving through Chapeltown one evening, noticed Cantors and that it was open so I stopped and bought myself fish and chips with a portion of mushy peas, a portion of curry sauce and a breadcake and set off home excited for my Cantors fish and chips. How wrong I was, to say I was disappointed would be a MASSIVE understatement. Not only was the battery all soggy but the fish looked more translucent than white like fish should be and it just wasn't nice at all. The chips weren't too bad BUT tasted like they were cooked in the same oil as everything else and it was really greasy. The mushy peas were a let down, they just tasted bland and dry and the curry sauce just tasted of salt instead of curry. I can't remember the last time I was so disappointed by a meal but I was seriously disappointed there was such a MASSIVE change in the quality of the fish and chips and that its gone so downhill as it used to have such a good name...”

“Been a Cantors customer from day but iv only ever got the chicken sandwich never the fish, and on occasions the wings. Hit and miss at times however ain’t really a regular anymore. There is an African lady who works there and everytime I go my sandwiches are spot on, big and crunchy, her customer service is amazing and she’s always polite. Thanks to her I still eat here.”

“Pleasent staff. Nice fish and chips small, portion was too much for us. We couldn't get over how much cheaper it was compared to prices in cumbria. Well worth 5 🌟”
