About Nutmegs Cafe
Run in the tea-room tradition, Nutmegs Cafe sits on Market Place in Hedon, near the High Street and Market Square in Hull. The kitchen makes its steak pie at home and sends the gravy out in its own boat, and the rest of the menu runs from cooked breakfasts and breakfast sandwiches to teacakes, scones and several vegetarian dishes. Home-made cakes and desserts fill out the counter, among them a lemon and raspberry cake. Afternoon tea can be booked or ordered ahead, and reserving a table is advised generally. A step-free entrance lets visitors with mobility needs get in without help, and high chairs make the room workable for families with young children. Out back, a garden seating area gives customers somewhere to eat outdoors, and dogs are welcome there, though not inside, and outdoor service does not run every day. Opening covers Monday to Saturday during the daytime, with Sundays closed. Coffee and latte are poured throughout.

Customer Review Summary
Home cooking is what draws the repeat visits here, with reviewers stressing that the food is made fresh on site: a plate steak pie in thick pastry with extra gravy served in a boat, a lemon and raspberry cake called fluffy and moist, and a birthday afternoon tea described as plentiful enough to defeat the table. Close behind is the cooked breakfast, praised for butchers sausages and proper fried bread, while others single out the apple pie, scones and teacakes, the Sunday lunch and a good latte. Several mention the vegetarian choice beyond a jacket potato, and one suggests reserving a table. The praise is not universal. One reviewer describes finishing breakfast and never being checked on, eventually settling up and buying coffee elsewhere, and notes a dusty table plant coated in salt and pepper residue. Another, having travelled in with dogs, was turned away when outdoor service was not running that day and says they won't return. A few find prices slightly high for basic items, though staff are repeatedly called friendly and accommodating to changes.

“I visited Nutmegs in Hedon’s Market Square with two friends for a birthday Afternoon Tea. The choice of food on offer was excellent and plentiful and the staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was cosy and welcoming and we will certainly return.”

“A charming spot on Hedon High Street, this café had a lot to offer. We arrived just as it opened and were quickly greeted. Our breakfast sandwiches and coffees were served promptly, and the prices were reasonable—great for a casual morning out. However, the service didn’t quite match the promising start. After finishing our food and drinks, no one checked in to ask how everything was or offer additional beverages. We waited around 35 to 45 minutes before deciding to settle up and leave, ultimately getting another coffee down the road. Additionally, a small detail detracted from the experience: the plant feature on our table was visibly dusty, covered in salt and pepper residue that seemed to have built up over time. We moved it aside to enjoy our space a little more. With just a bit more attention to ongoing service and table upkeep, this lovely café could easily make a lasting positive impression.”

“The best traditional home cooking I've tasted in years... using good quality ingredients cooked in an old fashioned method. No preservatives! No shortcuts . This food wouldn't be amiss on a Michelin menu. Well done ladies . Ps reserve a table. This place isnt a secret. I had homemade plate steak pie in a beautiful pastry crammed with big chunks of steak and extra gravy in a boat as standard. Then the best lemon and raspberry cake which was fluffy and moist and huge ! .I returned for breakfast again just fab .. thanks I will return when I'm back in the area”

“Staff are lovely, very classic older style little cafe. The prices are slightly higher than I would expect to pay in this more dated type cafe with basic items but they were accommodating to changes and attentive. Coffee was lovely, can't fault it, and the cakes are definitely homemade and look delicious, will try next time.”
