About Three Moorhens

On Hitchin Hill in Hitchin, Three Moorhens is a country pub with old wooden beams criss-crossing the ceiling and an external play area where families with children can spread out. It opens daily, though the kitchen closes between lunch and evening service. The menu includes a Sunday roast, with a mushroom and ale pie as an option for those who skip the meat. Shepherds pie and beef burgers cover the everyday pub dishes, and a veggie burger sits alongside the beef. Abbot Ale is sold at the bar. TNT Sports is shown for live matches.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the staff, describing a server who was attentive and considerate with an elderly mother, a friendly welcome for a lone afternoon visitor whom the kitchen was happy to feed, and a chef who was accommodating with dietary requirements. Dogs are welcomed, and one reviewer with a gluten-allergic dog praised the clean floors. On the food, the signature shepherd's pie is called utterly delicious, the sausage and mash with a crispy yet soft Yorkshire pudding is liked, and a veggie burger and Abbot Ale also earn mentions. The food draws the sharpest complaints. Two reviewers describe salt and pepper squid that tasted old, rubbery salmon topped with tiny prawns, burgers that were not hot, an undercooked veggie meatball dish, and a mushroom and ale pie roast with thick, lumpy gravy. One reports feeling nauseous afterward. Even these reviewers call the staff lovely, and the bar worker removed the meatballs from the bill.

“I was passing in the middle of the afternoon, not sure if they'd be still be serving food. They made it clear, that even though I was the only customer there, they were more than happy to get me whatever I wanted. The only reason I have marked the atmosphere score down is that I was the only one in, for most of the time. Sue was particularly friendly and helpful.”

“Visited here yesterday. Staff were nice, drinks were good, but the food was shocking. For starters, we had salt and pepper squid which tasted really old. Tiny, rubbery strips. Ordered two signature beef burgers, which were okay, weren't hot though. Chips were generic. The gravy was lukewarm so we sent it back to be reheated, which was fine. My partner got the grilled salmon fillet, which was atrocious. It was laid out as if you didn't want any of your food touching, even though the salmon is meant to be "topped" with king prawns. Salmon was the thinnest slice and rubbery. King prawns were NOT king prawns, but instead tiny, and once again, rubbery. Not fresh at all. Crispy smashed potatoes were tiny and you only got three, and once again, all separated, with a little dish of pesto. Also ordered a side of rosemary salted skin on fries, which were just normal, plain fries. This whole dish, with the fries, cost £21+. Realistically, we should have sent the salmon dish back, but my partner was just so hungry and didn't want to ruin a nice meal with my sister. This all cost £63, which absolutely wasn't worth it. Went to wetherspoons today, had lovely, HOT, fresh, flavourful food for ⅓ the price. 🙃 Moral of the story, don't order the seafood here.”

“Gemma was incredibly welcoming when I arrived. It was my first time visiting the pub, and I was looking for somewhere comfortable to have a working lunch and plug in my laptop. Gemma was really helpful, and Ollie the chef was very accommodating with my dietary requirements. I’d definitely recommend this place and will definitely be back! 💛✨️🧡✨️💛✨️🧡✨️💛”

“Thank you Sue! I was visiting with a small party including my elderly mother. Sue could not have been more attentive and considerate. She went out of her way to make our visit a pleasant and relaxed occasion. Plus, the veggie burger was delicious!”
