About Angels
Angels is a pub on Bedford Rd in Hitchin, and it has been a McMullen pub since 1957. An indoor soft play area gives families with children somewhere to spend the visit, and children's birthday parties there combine soft play, pizza making and ice lollies. The kitchen serves a Sunday roast with gravy, roast potatoes and cauliflower cheese, along with sourdough pizza, and waitstaff bring food to the table. The bar pours pints of Guinness. Some menu items can be unavailable at lunchtime. Larger family meals and birthday celebrations are held here, including a party of 20 served three courses, and a separate event space can be hired privately for groups or meetings. The pub is open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the indoor soft play area, which keeps children occupied during family meals, birthday parties and a pizza-making party with ice lollies. Close behind is friendly, accommodating service, with several describing a server who kept checking on the table and staff who made a party of 20 run smoothly, with every course served at once. Food is called delicious and great, with a decent-sized menu. One reviewer mentions the soft play is added to the bill per child. The caveats are specific. One diner says a Sunday roast was swamped in gravy, with hard roast potatoes and a tiny, runny cauliflower cheese, and that half the menu was unavailable at 1pm without being told until they had chosen. Another reviewer describes a male bar worker as unwelcoming and uninterested while topping up a pint of Guinness, though the woman behind the bar was friendly. Reviewers also describe a mother's day lunch where the greeting was swift and the service great.

“We celebrated our daughter's 13th birthday at Angels this evening with a family meal for 20 people, and it was absolutely perfect from start to finish. The pub/restaurant was spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated and air-conditioned throughout, making it a really comfortable place to celebrate. The food was absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced. Catering for a party of 20 is no easy task, especially across three courses, but everything ran so smoothly. Every course was served to all of us at the same time, there were no mistakes with any of the orders, and the service was exceptional. All of the staff were friendly, polite and professional, and nothing seemed too much trouble. They helped make the whole evening completely stress-free, allowing us to relax and enjoy such a special occasion. We had a fantastic evening and honestly couldn't have asked for anything better. Most importantly, we have a very happy 13-year-old daughter with some wonderful memories to treasure. Thank you to everyone at Angels for making her birthday so special! 😊”

“I’m afraid we won’t be returning. Our Sunday roast had so much gravy on it , the plate was completely swamped. I like gravy on my meat but this was unbelieveable. I wish I’d taken a picture or asked for a bowl to pour it into from my plate. 2 of the party don’t like gravy so their dinner was ruined completely. The roast potatoes were so hard that perhaps the chef thought drowning the food in gravy would soften them up. The tiny portion of cauli cheese just turned runny and the whole meal tasted bland. We really should’ve refused the meals, but we picked out what was salvageable, and told the waitress that the dinners were ruined by so much gravy, and to have a word with the chef. Everywhere I’ve ever been has had gravy in a seperate gravy boat. The waitress was lovely and friendly, the only reason I gave The Angel any stars. When we ordered at 1pm 1/2 the menu was not available, but we’re not told until we had chosen them! Should have been told when seated”

“Had a lovely time our server was Toni who was amazing kind kept checking on us in the family area my nephew was in softplay while we ate and we had a lovely experience all round. I've been there a few times and it's been nice but Toni really made it an amazing afternoon all praise to her she's definitely suited to a customer service role which I'm finding isn't necessarily easily found recently”
