About Leila's Kitchen

In Hebden Bridge, Leila's Kitchen is a vegetarian restaurant and café-bar at Oxford House that pairs Persian dishes with British homemade cooking. Ash Reshteh, a Persian soup, and Mirza Ghasemi sit alongside dishes built on more traditional British ingredients, and the scrambled tofu appears on the breakfast menu. Breakfast and lunch are served, with coffee, loose teas, homemade cakes and ice cream. The whole menu is vegetarian, with several vegan options and a range of gluten-free dishes. The café is fully licensed, and the drinks list includes local vegan and organic choices. The kitchen is open and sits right by the seating, and the owners, a couple, serve customers directly. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Diners come for Persian vegetarian cooking, with the mezze platter named most often, alongside the Ash Reshteh, Mirza Ghasemi and a Persian soup and stew. Close behind is the vegan breakfast, where reviewers praise scrambled tofu seasoned to perfection, along with the coffee and tea. One reviewer calls the ice cream the best they have had. Many describe the hosts and owners as attentive and friendly, and one brought friends back for lunch after a first breakfast. One Persian reviewer had a poor first visit. Two banana milkshakes arrived warm and watery with barely any banana flavour. When the reviewer said so, the staff member smiled without apologising or offering a replacement, and no one checked on the table afterward. That reviewer also felt the room could have been cleaner. Others single out the open kitchen beside the seating as what makes the room cosy and welcoming.

“I visited here for the first time today. I don’t usually leave negative reviews, and I’m not someone who’s overly picky, but unfortunately my experience wasn’t good. When we arrived, the place looked nice, and I liked the idea of a vegetarian menu. In my opinion, the restaurant could have been cleaner, but that wasn’t the main issue. The biggest disappointment was the service. We ordered two banana milkshakes, and they were honestly just warm, watery milk with barely any banana flavour. They weren’t cold, thick, or enjoyable at all. We paid almost £10 for the two milkshakes and couldn’t even drink them, they ended up going in the bin, which felt like a complete waste of money. I politely told the lady in Persian, “I’m sorry, but the banana milkshake is too milky and not thick enough.” She just smiled awkwardly and didn’t acknowledge the issue, apologise, or offer to replace them or suggest an alternative. Throughout our visit, no one came to check if everything was okay or whether we were happy with our order. What disappointed me most wasn’t just the poor quality of the milkshakes, but the lack of customer service. When customers raise a genuine concern, you would expect some effort to resolve it and make sure they leave satisfied. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. As a Persian couple, we were excited to try this place, but because of both the quality and the service, we won’t be returning. Sadly, it was a very disappointing first experience.”
