About Rye Bakery Cafe
Rye Bakery Cafe is a cafe in Frome, on Whittox Ln, set in a converted church with high ceilings and arched windows. It opened in 2017 and works as a bakery, with bread made in-house and a pastry counter that carries cardamom buns and cheese twists. Hot sandwiches, filled rolls, focaccias and toasties sit alongside seasonal salads, soups and hot stews. The brunch menu includes bakery-style breakfast items such as a sausage bun. A children's play area sits inside the cafe, and a quiet Rest Nest offers a separate space. Dogs are welcome. Large bookings are taken for groups, and the team also provides catering and hosts community events and meet-ups. The cafe is part of the RISE Community Centre, where classes and workshops run, and a shop and a balcony display art.

Customer Review Summary
Pastries draw the most praise at this converted church cafe, with reviewers singling out the cardamom buns, a cinnamon bun and a wide range of unusual pastries beyond standard croissants. Close behind are the bread and brunch dishes, including toasted cheese sandwiches, a kids bacon bap and a sausage bun one diner called the nicest breakfast bun they had ever had. Several call the coffee great, though one found it short of top marks. Reviewers describe the church as beautiful and airy, with friendly staff and plenty of seating. Not every order lands. One visitor found the cardamom bun's exterior too chewy and hard, and the cheese twist carried a strong mustard taste they had not expected. Another party's brownie was undercooked and practically mush. The children's play area is mentioned repeatedly, and one reviewer calls it a great place for parents to meet.

“Friendliest staff and the most amazing pastries as well and specials and brunch options. Outside area available too as well as seating in the beautiful church. Such a lovely peaceful cafe very popular with locals”

“We came this morning from Southampton, service was very good. Came specifically for the cardamom buns based on a photo on a google review. The flavouring was good, but the exterior was slightly too chewey and hard. We also ordered the cheese twist, which had a mustard taste, but we hadn't realised this before ordering - good if you like mustard, too much if not keen. Coffee was very nice. Good overall if in the area.”

“All the pastries look amazing, the three we had was great. Coffee wasn’t 10/10 but I’m a bit of a snob about coffee, hence why it’s still 5 Star.”

“Great place with interesting food and lots of seating. Also has a lovely children's area and a fun enclosed seating pod/sphere! Also a shop and a balcony displaying art.”

“This is a beautiful airy space for a chilled coffee and some lunch/pastry. Staff are friendly and helpful. The food served is excellent, really high quality ingredients and fresh. The bread is divine. We loved it.”

Highlights
“RYE Cafe opened in 2017 in a converted church, tucked behind the cobbles of Catherine Hill. We serve simple, seasonal food made with quality produce from farmers who share our values. As a working bakery, our core offering is delicious things on bread, hot sandwiches, filled rolls, focaccias and toasties. For lighter options, there are seasonal salads and soups, alongside hot stews and savoury pastries for a hearty lunch. RYE Cafe is a place for brunch and after-school pick-me-ups, with a children’s play area and a quiet Rest Nest. Open Tuesday–Sunday, we welcome large bookings, community events, meet-ups, and offer catering. We’re part of the RISE Community Centre, where a wide range of classes and workshops take place.”
