Quick info
About Makars Mash Bar
Makars Mash Bar is an Edinburgh restaurant at 9-12 Bank St that builds its menu around mashed potatoes. Diners choose a mash, such as Stornoway black pudding or applewood smoked cheddar, and have it served under a meat or vegetarian topping. The meat toppings include beef shoulder, lamb shank, pork shank and chicken. Starters on the 17-dish menu include the Homemade Free Range Gourmet Scotch Egg, which works as a shared plate, and the Mini Haggis, Neeps & Tatties. Tables run on a walk-in system, where the team takes a name and phone number and sends a text when a table is ready. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return most for the mash paired with slow-cooked meat, and the pork shank is the dish named most, with meat that falls off the bone, often alongside black pudding or bacon and green onion mash. Close behind are the beef shoulder, the lamb shank and the chicken with applewood smoked cheddar mash. The scotch egg starter is repeatedly praised as crispy and delicious, and one diner found the haggis far better than expected. Desserts include the sticky toffee pudding, the Cranachan and a boozy Baileys Ice-N-Dirty, though one reviewer found dessert good but not the best in the area. Service is described as friendly, welcoming and quick. The main caveat is demand: reviewers note the room is very busy, a line was still out the door after one lunch, and a large party without a reservation may face a long wait. One reviewer found the mash drier than the French style, though the gravy suited it. Several describe the walk-in system, where names and phone numbers are taken and a text arrives when a table is ready.

“If you don’t have reservations for this place and have a large party, it is likely you will have a long wait for a table. We (a party of 2) happened to time it perfectly to get a table for an early dinner. We enjoyed our food immensely. My chicken with applewood smoked cheddar mash was excellent. This truly is a nice comfort food kind of place!”

“An absolute 5/5 experience in Edinburgh! The food here was super, super good—hearty, full of flavour, and top-tier comfort food. On top of the incredible meal, the service was fantastic. Huge thanks to Jonny for being so kind, friendly, and quick to take care of us. I can't recommend this place enough and will definitely be back!”

“Got in right when they opened at noon for the walkin section of the restaurant. Cannot emphasize enough that experience was wonderful and style was great. Lamb and beef shoulder was excellent and the mash combinations to choose from all were great. The mash is more dry than the French style but the gravy that came with it paired well. Also the aperol spritz alternative elderberry gin spritz was tasty. We left and there was still a line out the door. Highly recommend this place!”

“I came here to celebrate my birthday, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of my trip! My server, Yasilis, was incredibly friendly and attentive, always making sure I had everything I needed. The Haggis was much more delicious than I expected, and I’m so glad I tried this traditional Scottish dish. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and I really enjoyed my meal. The restaurant was very busy, so I highly recommend making a reservation in advance. Thank you for making my birthday in Edinburgh so memorable! 🎉”
