  “The basement is a regular haunt of mine, used to live nearby and it made for a great mid-week outing where no reservation was required. Either as a group or as an individual. Weekends are busy, but they take bookings. Today, Tuesday, I had a booking for 8pm. I arrived at 7.55 and was promptly seen to a table, great! Unfortunately, 35 minutes later, I was still at my table, no drinks order, no food order. While busy, it wasn’t rammed, and I’ve seen service significantly better while much busier. I observed, and tried to gain attention of, the numerous servers who were chatting with (not taking orders) patrons or other bar staff, to no avail. Upon the 35 minutes mark, I opted to leave, and spoke to a member of bar staff on my way out to express my frustration. Their answer was they were “busy” This is really disappointing for me as the basement is one of my favourite places for tacos, the food is good and prices reasonable. Their bar selection is great and service normally flawless. Unfortunately it’s the bad experiences which stick with you, and that’s what’s prompted this review. It’s unlikely I’ll be back after such a poor experience, left to feel “forgotten””

  “Absolutely cannot fault this place at all! Phenomenal staff, all very attentive, friendly and chatty. The food came out quick and was pretty great all around! It's priced well, atmosphere is positive and overall a really good experience. Probably one of the better mexican restaurants I've been to in Edinburgh and will certainly return. If you're ever in the area, I'd recommend heading here instead of somewhere like Edinburgh street food, its a lot better vibes! Will be back soon!”

  “Staff were great! Got seated straight away and ordered some drinks, I highly recommend the spicy margarita. We ordered wee starter plates for the table, wings, corn and the peppers. All fantastic! Had the chicken also the steak fajitas, generous portions and so tasty. The prawn tacos with the pineapple salsa were amazing too! Loved everything, the staff, the food, the atmosphere. Won’t be long before we’re back.”

  “Excellent Mexican meals , wicked cocktails , superb service and a top notch rock mix makes this our goto for a taco or burritto when back in Edinburgh , I had 2 of the fish tacos and they were fab , will definitely go for the taco platter when in next to try them all at once , i followed thatup with the Chicken tortillas which were some of the best ive had and then finished with an affogatto which was intense. Service was excellent from everybody who spoke to us , they all seemed to enjoy what they were doing and were friendly and informative if we had any questions . We went on a Friday night and it was heaving so definitely book , very recommended”

  “Amazing place for both veg and non vegetarians. The duck taco and sweet potato taco are stand outs. Please try their Mexican sodas they’re fab too! We were lucky to catch some live music on our last night. Visiting this place third night in a row, goes to show what good staff and good food can do. No need to be flashy, just really good. 5/5 in every aspect. Staff are warm and welcoming 10/5 for them.”

  “decided to finally go to basement after various people have recommended it! went on a wednesday night so wasn’t too busy but still glad we chose to book! we started off with some cocktails which were both delicious so i really recommend the blueberry and lychee! for mains i chose the drunken bean burrito and my boyfriend got the birria tacos both were so good and very filling, the portion is worth the price! also added to the meal with the corn ribs and sweet potato fries which complimented the meal! definitely will be back, with friendly service, and delicious food, i get why so many people praised this place!”

  “Had a great dinner. We ordered guacamole for the table which was really yummy. I got the chicken fajitas, and my friend got the birria tacos. Both meals were large, filling and tasty. The head bar tender guy sort of pressured us into trying drinks from their new menu that he said he worked tirelessly on the day before. He meant well, but the drinks were good. We got placed in a small room off to the side which felt a little isolating but if you’re looking for a more intimate spot then you would enjoy the little room. We would have preferred to be in the larger spaces.”

  “It took a really really really long time for the food to come by the table, coming already hungry made the wait feeling like forever … however once the food arrived it made the waiting worth it, food is on a different level, really enjoyed every bit of it, recommend coming for the vibe and quality of the food, do understand the waiting due to busy hours but would make the experience better by having a quicker service, but since the food was top notch, I don’t mind the waiting. So apparently it “Taco Tuesday” that was cause the delay, understandable and worth waiting for.”
