About Cafe Truva

Cafe Truva is a Mediterranean cafe and breakfast restaurant on The Shore in Leith, Edinburgh, set by the water on a cobbled street. The menu runs to 33 dishes, and breakfast brings the Turkish Breakfast and the Turkish Brunch Bagel. Turkish coffee arrives in a traditional cezve, and the coffee is made with beans the team roasts itself. Bacon rolls come with a haggis option, and the kitchen also makes soups such as lentil and leek and potato with dill. Vegan moussaka, aubergine shakshuka, simit and baklava appear on the menu too. Scones are home-made, with jam made fresh each morning. The cafe opens daily, and dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Turkish coffee is what reviewers mention most, served in the traditional cezve and described as rich and flavorful without being too strong. Close behind are the Turkish breakfast and the Turkish brunch bagel, along with the aubergine shakshuka, lentil soup, vegan moussaka and home-made scones. Several praise the friendly, welcoming staff and the family who run the place, and a few mention the view over the water and cobbled street from the outdoor tables. Reviewers also name baklava, simit, hot chocolate and Turkish apple tea. The main complaint comes from two parents who say staff repeatedly asked them to keep their two-year-old children quiet, so they left feeling unwelcome, and both note the sign advertises dogs but they found it not child friendly. Another diner, asking for one or two ingredients to be left out because of lactose intolerance, got a smirk and a remark that portions would be smaller at the same price. Even so, one reviewer found the place busy at 8.30 on a Sunday morning.

“The food was really good! I had the Turkish coffee, which I personally liked a lot better than their other coffee options. My wife had a chai latte which she enjoyed. For food, I got the aubergine shakshuka, which was very tasty. My wife also enjoyed her dish a lot. We will definitely be going back. They are also dog friendly!”

“Everything was delicious but when we asked for 1-2 ingredients (one of them because of lactose intolerance) to be opted from a couple of dishes we we’re responded to with a smirk and an unnecessary remark that the portions will be smaller but the price will remain the same. If they can’t accommodate they should have just said so politely and calmly. No need to be lectured.”
