About La Spaghettata
Family owned and independent, La Spaghettata is an Italian restaurant in Durham City Centre, trading from 66 Saddler St since 1996. The menu spans pizza, pasta, seafood, meat and poultry, so a table can mix very different orders. Pasta dishes include vodka pasta and seafood linguine, and cannelloni is also on the list. Pizzas run beyond the traditional toppings, with chilli honey as one of the additions. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available for guests with dietary needs. The restaurant is open daily, and the dining room is on the upper level.

Customer Review Summary
The complaints are specific. Two reviewers found the vodka pasta tasteless or bland, and one said it shared the same sauce as the ravioli and salmon pasta. Another described a cannelloni as heavily salted and an arrabbiata that tasted like it came from a jar. A separate reviewer called the pizza frozen-tasting, with rubbery cheese that even the children left. Several mention the climb up the stairs, and one felt staff seemed offended when dessert was declined and then hurried the table out without asking about the meal.

“It's a pity that the food absolutely let's down this place. It's in the second level, a really nice atmosphere, with Italian waiters and staff and the prices are reasonable. The servings are generous and the food looks great. But unfortunately, that's where it stops. The food is tasteless slop, Italian tourist food at its worst. My cannelloni seemed to have has the salt bucket tipped into it. My wife's vodka pasta was absolutely tasteless. My daughters arabiyata pasta tasted like it was from a £1 Lidl jar. So disappointing. The ingredients are there, the potions are there, the atmosphere is great, the serving staff are authentic. Why not put some effort into the preparation and seasoning? Now I know what the Americans call a Italian "red sause joint".”

“Frozen Pizza?!? If you Love bad hotel pizza youll love this place! Cheap frozen bases with that signature hotel meal deal tast, without the included drink... congealed cheese after eating 2 slices that felt like rubber going down. Even the kids who eat everything even if covered in dirt didn't want to eat it after the first slice. The atmosphere was bad too, the warm glow of candles replaced by bright white table lamps that just got in the way and cramped tables was not worth the climb up. __Overall__ Food 0.1 / 10 Atmosphere 3 / 10 Value 1 / 10 Service 5 / 10”

“Lovely food. Friendly service. Canny vibe. Decent prices. We hadn't booked as we weren't sure where we would be, or when. That wasn't an issue at 5 pm on a Saturday.”

“I really wanted to like this restaurant because the atmosphere was lovely and the service was excellent at first. The waiter was welcoming, friendly, and genuinely Italian, which gave the place an authentic feel. Unfortunately, the food was a huge disappointment. I ordered the gluten-free vodka pasta, but it seemed to have exactly the same sauce as the ravioli and the salmon pasta. There was very little distinction between the dishes, and the flavours were bland and uninspiring. It felt like different pasta with the same generic sauce rather than freshly prepared individual recipes. The experience became even more disappointing at the end of the meal. As welcoming as they were initially, they seemed offended when we declined dessert. After the food we'd just eaten, I certainly wasn't keen to volunteer myself or my family for another cooking experiment. From that point on, it felt as though they wanted to rush us out. What surprised me most was that nobody asked whether we'd enjoyed the food, despite the staff clearly seeing that we had left much of it on our plates as we left. A simple "Was everything okay?" would have shown that they genuinely cared about their customers' experience. I wish there had been more honest reviews about the taste of the food, because I wouldn't have chosen to eat here if I'd known. The atmosphere and the initial welcome were lovely, but sadly the food was the biggest let-down, and the way the meal ended left a disappointing final impression.”

“Cosy and buzzing atmosphere. Quite loud during dinnertime but I had the best seafood linguine here! I can’t think of another restaurant in the UK who did a better one. The sauce was perfectly balanced on sweetness and saltiness and wasn’t sour. Great portion of seafood although could have used more linguine.”
