About The Ship Inn & Waterfront Restaurant
The Ship Inn & Waterfront Restaurant is a gastropub on Fisher St in Dundee, across from the beach, with a large single-paned window that looks out over the Tay. The nautical bar and the restaurant are separate sections, and dining takes place in an upstairs area. Starters include haggis pakora and Cullen Skink, and a mackerel mac and cheese is served whenever it is on the menu. Those dishes put local ingredients and a pub kitchen's comfort cooking side by side on one menu. Dogs are allowed in the bar area but not in the restaurant, so the bar suits visitors who arrive with a pet.

Customer Review Summary
Cullen skink is the dish reviewers raise most, called rich and comforting and absolutely divine, and several diners start with it alongside black pudding fritters, haggis pakora and salt and pepper squid. Close behind is the fish: Arbroath battered fish and chips, a fish pie one reviewer can't remember bettering, a fish stew special, and mackerel mac and cheese, which two reviewers single out when it is on the menu. Crab cakes and a braised blade of beef also get a mention. Portions are generous enough to be the main complaint. One diner found the fish stew far too big to finish and would have happily taken two-thirds of it, and another called the fish pie enormous. The restaurant fills quickly, and a couple of reviewers suggest booking. Outdoor seating looks across the water, and one reviewer on a mobility scooter notes that a waitress walked her upstairs to the ladies' herself rather than just giving directions, though she would have preferred one downstairs.

“The Cullen Skink here is absolutely divine. Mackerel Mac & Cheese is a fantastic choice when it's on the menu as well.”

“We dropped in without a booking but we were fortunate enough to get an early table. Friendly, accommodating staff, served us delicious food, in traditional, comfortable and attractive surroundings with a beautiful view. The restaurant was busy from opening at 5pm so I really would recommend booking. The crab cakes stood out but the whole meal was lovely. No food photos though, too busy eating. Would definitely go back.”

“Brilliant. Went for lunch and a couple of pints with my partner today and found everything to be perfect. Cold beer and hot food. I recommend their mackerel mac and cheese if it's available 🤤🤤 The staff was brilliant too. I don't recall the women's name who served us and helped us out but she was great. Really appreciate her thoughtfulness too. Can't wait to come back :)”

“We ate here while passing through on our recent motorbike tour. In over a fortnight's trip, our dinner at the Ship was a standout highlight! We both had the fish stew that was on special, and it was absolutely excellent. My only complaint was that it was far too big, I'd have happily paid the same price for two-thirds the portion size. I was legitimately sad I couldn't finish it. On top of that, a friendly pub with helpful staff, a big thumbs up from us!”
