Customer Review Summary
Sunday lunch comes up most, from the Bird and the Beast, a massive platter for two to share, to a plate with beets and cheesy leeks and a sticky toffee pudding to finish. Close behind are the Pie³, three mini pies with crisp pastry and generous fillings, and the chicken bbq chip bucket, while a pint of Ay Up Duck is called smooth and a good match for the pies. Reviewers repeatedly mention huge portions, friendly staff and a good range of drinks. The main complaints concern the food. One diner found the Yorkshire pudding dry and tough and waited nearly an hour for the meal, and suggests booking an early slot. Another rates the pub for its well kept beers but not so much for the food. Dogs are welcome, and a party of ten, with one extra guest turning up on a busy Saturday, was given a room to itself. One staff member even gave a visiting dog some beef.

“We had booked a table for 10 on a really busy Saturday. Then one extra turned up but they were happy to accommodate and gave us some room all to ourselves which was perfect. Food very reasonably priced and very good standard. Thoroughly enjoyed by all. Don't want to recommend it too highly because I don't want tables not to be available when we want to go again 😂”

“Very good Sunday lunch (the Bird and the Beast is a massive platter for 2 to share and you will not leave hungry!) the decor has been updated and upgraded from the photo on Google maps. Nice staff, great quality food and good range of drinks on offer.”

“Overall the Sunday lunch was very good. Loved the beets and the cheesy leeks. Can also recommend the sticky toffee pudding. Only two things that let it down for me was the 'proper' Yorkshire pudding. Proper dry and tough. And the near hour wait from arriving to getting the food. I would say it's probably best to book an early slot. Otherwise the service was friendly and efficient and overall a lovely meal. Would go again.”

“A great pub and one we always enjoy stopping at. The food is proper, hearty pub grub, with generous portions and plenty of choice. There’s also a good selection of drinks, so there’s something for everyone. The staff are always friendly, welcoming and helpful, which makes the whole experience even better. My wife and I regularly use it as a stopping-off point when we’re travelling to and from London or Europe, and it’s become a place we look forward to visiting. Highly recommended if you’re looking for good food, good drinks and a genuinely friendly atmosphere. We’ll definitely keep coming back!”

“If you're in Derby and looking for proper pub food, the Silk Mill is well worth a visit. I went for the Pie³, which lets you choose three different mini pies, and it's such a great idea if, like me, you struggle to pick just one. Every pie was packed with flavour, with perfectly crisp pastry and generous fillings. It's proper comfort food done really well, and the portion size is more than enough to leave you satisfied. To go with it, I had a pint of Ay Up Duck, which was excellent. It's a smooth, refreshing beer with plenty of flavour without being too heavy, and it paired perfectly with the pies. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, with that classic pub feel that's ideal whether you're popping in for a quick pint or settling in for a meal. The staff were friendly and the whole experience felt relaxed from start to finish. I'll definitely be back. Between the fantastic Pie³, a great pint of Ay Up Duck, and the inviting atmosphere, it's easy to see why the Silk Mill is such a popular spot in Derby.”
