About Surrey Street Cafe

Surrey Street Cafe sits behind a market booth in the Croydon fruit and Surrey market area, serving as a cafe on Surrey St for people passing through the market. The menu runs to shepherds and cottage pie, bangers and mash, and burgers, alongside an English breakfast set of fried egg, sausage, bacon, beans, and two slices of buttered toast with tea or coffee. The cottage pie comes with chips or mash and vegetables, and the beans on offer are St Nicholas Baked Beans. High chairs are available for families with young children. The cafe takes walk-ins rather than bookings, and it opens daily during the day only. The decor has stayed the same for years, and the space remains simple and functional rather than updated.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often come for the breakfast, a fry-up of egg, sausage, bacon, beans and toast with tea or coffee that they call big, tasty and good value. Close behind are the homemade pies, with the shepherd's pie, cottage pie and a chicken and mushroom pie singled out, one diner noting it tasted like a meal at home. Others mention bangers and mash with grilled onions and gravy, and an American style burger with crisp golden fries. Reviewers also praise real buttered toast, a favourite brand of baked beans, and very hot coffee and tea. The owner is described as friendly and funny, and the cafe as old school and tucked behind a market booth, with one reviewer calling the interior not the cleanest looking. The one sharply negative account says a sausage roll held a single sausage cut into four strips, that the sausage was pre-cooked and reheated, and that the reviewer felt ill afterwards. Another mentions an order arriving as egg and bacon instead of sausage and egg, though the bacon looked good. Several diners say they went back for a second visit.

“We wondered around Croydon while my car was in service and yes it took ages. Hunger found us at this old school cafe served by a charming big guy with bald head he was funny. Anyway I ordered the omelette breakfast and greedy me added a chicken and mushroom pie 😳the gut busting breakfast was delicious huge and well worth the money 🥳if you find yourself in Croydon go check them out. They are in the fruit market area.”

“While strolling the surrey market i complained that i was hungry. A big bald man who was smoking on the street beside me then pointed to his restaurant hidden behind a market booth. We followed him in and we sat down. The wall was plastered with so many affordable choices! While not the cleanest looking of restaurants the place was decent enough. However, when the food arrived it was piping hot and served in large portions. My wife had the sheppards pie, i had bangers and mash, and our son enjoyed an american style burger. Shepards pie eas homemade that morning. My bangerd and mash came with perfectly sauted grilled onions with tasty gravy. The american style burger was spiced and grilled just right. The fries it came with were cooked superbly. They were golden brown, crisp, and not too greasy. Overall, the place is well worth more than one visit. The cheap menu with large tasty servings should keep most people coming back! I definitely recommend because we were sooo sick of corporate food that to find this little hole in the wall made our last day in the uk complete with a belly full of home cooked goodness. Thanks.”

“Hiding behind a market booth. We followed our nose. The owner was standing outside and greeted us. Went in and found his amazing menu. Ordered the shepherds pie. Was like a meal at home. Will definitely go back.”
