About Sri Lankan Street food and Cafe

On Tower St in Coventry, Sri Lankan Street Food and Cafe serves Sri Lankan dishes from a trailer with limited seating, including some outdoor spots for those who want to eat in the open air. Egg hoppers and milk hoppers stand out on the menu, with a sweet coconut-brown sugar centre. Kottu comes in chicken, beef, or lamb, while mutton rolls and vegetable rolls appear as starters. Chicken fried rice is served with a crunchy red chili sauce or crushed chilli prawns, and watalappam rounds out the dessert options. Dishes are offered across different spice levels, with a milder version available on request. Food is prepared fresh to order, so a wait can be expected. High chairs are available for families with young children. It opens daily, and reservations are recommended.

Customer Review Summary

The chicken kottu draws the most consistent praise, described by reviewers as bursting with spice and flavor and repeatedly called one of the best versions they've had outside Sri Lanka. Close behind, the hoppers earn attention, from crispy egg hoppers to the coconutty milk appam, and the mutton rolls and watalappam dessert are singled out by name as standouts, with one reviewer calling it the best watalappam they've found. Fried rice, biryani, and beef curry also draw specific mention for their spice and freshness. Several reviewers note big portions at fair prices and staff who explain dishes to newcomers. The recurring caveat is around delivery and wait times: one reviewer describes food arriving stone cold via UberEats at a markup they felt was excessive, and another recounts a nearly hour-long wait when an order was seemingly forgotten, though the food itself was called delicious once it arrived. A few also mention the trailer setup has limited seating and only one heater in cold weather. One diner recalls being given a taste of the day's biryani special alongside their order.

“Super delicious Sri Lankan kottu and biryani.. and best service .highly recommended Thankyou!”

“We ordered for just the two of us, so it wasn't a particularly big or complicated order. To start, we had the mutton rolls, which were absolutely beautiful. My partner ordered the chicken kottu with a mango juice, and I ordered the chicken curry with rice and a cup of chai tea. My partner's drink arrived first, followed by his food, and he was able to eat his entire meal while I was still waiting. Around 10 minutes after he had finished, the server apologised and said she'd get my tea, but there was still no sign of my food. By this point, I'd been waiting around an hour. My partner eventually went up to ask where my meal was, and the server looked genuinely confused. I'm almost certain my order had been forgotten. After that, my food arrived about 10 minutes later. The disappointing part is that the food itself was absolutely delicious. The chicken curry was packed with flavour and was well worth the wait from a taste perspective. Unfortunately, the service really let the experience down. I understand that mistakes happen, but there was very little communication or acknowledgement until we asked what was happening. The food is fantastic, but after the poor service, I'm not sure I'd return.”

“Popped in on the hottest day of the year. I had a brilliant mango lassi for my drink and I miss it already. The beef kottu was good but glad I asked for the more mild version as I think the more authentic spicy version might have tipped me over the edge, the veggie roll was even better. The watalappam for dessert is not going to make the Instagram reels of annoying "influencers" but it went down a treat with me. Very much one of the better places in Coventry and really affordable too.”

“Tiny little restaurant. I'd seen it reviewed highly on a youtube video but never got around to visiting. Food was great, and expected small portions as it is street food. Portions were big though so took plenty home. I would say food is quite spicy for those more timid diners spice wise. We tried one of each of the rolls...which were all lovely. And a chicken dish that looked like biryani but wasnt. And a Watermelon juice.”

“I was so happy to find this hidden gem in Coventry. Always love kottu but it's usually so expensive elsewhere, especially for restaurants that offer dine-in options. I was really impressed by the flavour and the spicy sauce that came with it. Will definitely come to enjoy other items on the menu if I am in Coventry again!”
