Customer Review Summary
Fish mains are the draw, with monkfish named most often: one reviewer had it with cafe de Paris, and another called the monkfish loin the highlight of the day. Lemon sole, battered haddock, cod and half a lobster also earn praise. Close behind are the small plates, including padron peppers, pickle and ricotta, a pork neck kebab, buffalo oysters, fish skin and a corn dog, along with a buckfast braised short rib. Reviewers also single out the Guinness margarita and Guinness cocktails, a good beer list and a bottle of Txakoli. Several mention the river views and friendly service. The main complaint is pace. One reviewer who had booked still waited for a table, and drinks ordered at the bar arrived only as they were being seated. The room was busy and noisy enough that bartenders struggled to hear orders. One diner found the sirloin plainly cooked rather than flame grilled, and another had plates cleared while a husband was still eating. One group enjoyed it so much they came back for breakfast.

“This place is excellent, where do I start. Starter/ small plates fabulous, how can padron peppers taste this good and the pickle and ricotta is one of the prettiest dishes I've ever seen. The pork neck kebab was soo good, the flavour and texture soo on point (love pork cooked medium rare). The fish for mains was the star of the show. I had the monkfish and cafe de Paris, it was exceptional, I would come back just for this. The rest of the table had lemon sole and battered haddock which they were raving about but I still think mine was the best. They had a cracking range of beer and the bull house lager was superb. Rest of the table said the wine was good as well.”

“Fabulous dinner last night. We had nibbles of peppers, smoked almonds and huge garlic olives to start. All delicious. Dinner was cod and 1/2 lobster...absolutely beautiful. Will definitely be back. Staff v attentive and friendly..1 thing to mention...my plate and empty starter plates were removed while my husband was still eating his starter..I would prefer to wait till all eating finished.”

“:It’s essential to book a table in advance at this restaurant, and that’s exactly what we did. However, upon arrival, we still had to wait around 30 minutes for a table to become available. During that time, we ordered drinks at the bar, but unfortunately, they only arrived just as we were being shown to our table indoors from the terrace. That was disappointing, especially after already waiting for some time. Be prepared to wait a little longer for the food as well, but in our opinion, it was worth it. Everything was fresh, delicious, and well prepared. We visited in the middle of the week, and the restaurant was very busy and quite noisy. The bartenders struggled to hear customers, making it difficult to place orders at times. In terms of value, the food was reasonably priced. We paid £65 for two main courses , tenderstem broccoli and one starter, while two Guinness cocktails cost £27. Despite the delays with the drinks service and the wait for our table, the quality of the food made for an enjoyable dining experience overall.”

“We just had the most amazing 3 course lunch at this place. A gorgeous spot. Very welcoming to me, partner and dog. The food was incredible. My favourite was the buckfast braised short rib with sweetcorn puree. The butter bean mash in my main (see pic) was phenomenal! Thanks folks!”

“Tucked along the Causeway Coast, Lir is the kind of place that doesn’t shout for attention. The restaurant’s philosophy leans heavily into hyper-local sourcing, with seafood taking centre stage. This isn’t just a stylistic choice; it’s a reflection of place. Expect impeccably fresh fish and shellfish, often landed just hours before service, handled with restraint and respect. Flavours are clean, precise, and thoughtfully balanced. It’s the kind of food that trusts its ingredients, rather than trying to outshine them. But what elevates Lir beyond a very good seafood restaurant is its attention to detail. The pacing, the plating, and the atmosphere feel considered without ever tipping into formality. There’s also a quiet ambition here. While rooted in Northern Irish produce, the kitchen isn’t afraid to incorporate modern techniques or subtle global influences. The result is a dining experience that feels both grounded and forward-thinking.”
