About Toast Colchester

Toast Colchester is a coffee shop on Culver St W in Colchester, founded by three friends, with another site in Witham. The menu centres on toasties, with gluten free and vegan options, and the food and cakes are made in-store with a patisserie chef. The drinks list includes a vegan cappuccino and a custard cream drink alongside other coffees. Used coffee grounds are turned into fertiliser for plants, and the cups are recyclable paper. Upstairs, long tables seat groups, and lots of sockets and wooden worktops give people room to work or study. The decor is black, with profiles of the team on the walls. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the staff, describing friendly, welcoming service where regulars say they are remembered and one indecisive customer was met with patience. Toasties and the variety of toast toppings come close behind, with a vegan cappuccino and the coffee singled out as great. One reviewer enjoys the drinks that include a custard cream, and another notes the cakes are made in store by a patisserie chef. On the downside, one reviewer found it a little pricey for a toastie. A coeliac customer arrived in the afternoon to find the gluten free toastie sold out. Staff offered low gluten options that the customer could not eat, so they left empty handed, though they found the staff polite. A couple of reviewers highlight the upstairs area, with long tables for groups, plenty of sockets, greenery, wooden worktops, a balcony and an outdoor patio that suit working or studying.

“We popped in here on the spur of the moment while we were shopping. They were very busy but we were served very quickly. The staff were friendly and helpful. Our drinks and food arrived quicker than expected and was great quality. The place was clean and well maintained. I felt the prices were reasonable and well worth paying for the quality and great service.”

“If I could give 0 I absolutely would! I witnessed a member of your staff wearing your uniform in town this morning at pret she had some sort of drink in her hand that she had purchased from there. She has very dark/black hair tied up - black jeans/trousers, trainers. The language that come out of her mouth towards two innocent individuals walking past this morning 29.09.26 at around 08:30 was absolutely disgusting! Regardless if she had an issue that is no way to conduct yourself in any matter let alone when wearing a uniform! This has put me off coming to toast. I am a huge ice coffee lover and I can categorically tell you now me and my friends and family will no longer be coming to toast any more, even though I am a huge fan of the venue. The language that came from this individual I have never heard anything like it. It was vile, disgusting, disrespectful and humiliating. I hope from this message you can work out who I am talking about and talk to her and give her a lesson on manners and how to conduct herself in public. But from the disgusting language I heard this morning I would not keep her.”

“Tried to order a gluten free toastie and was told that there was none left at around 1.30pm or so in the afternoon. I have a gluten allergy (Coeliac disease) and tried to explain that to the staff, they then tried to offer me things with ‘low gluten’ which I cannot have as I have to be strictly gluten free. Unfortunately I had to leave empty handed in the end as there was very little that I could eat. The staff was polite enough to me so I won’t give 1 star.”

“Wonderful toasties! Although it is a little pricey for a...toastie... but still very worth it! Good seating upstairs including long tables for large groups of friends... if you are indeed lucky enough to have friends. Tasty drinks too, including lots of weird and wonderful things for people who think putting a custard cream in a drink is a good idea.”

“Friendly welcome from first walking in. Quite dark with all the black decor but I like it. I liked reading up on the team on the walls. Gave me a feeling it was a real local business and real people. Not a chain with some greedy CEO behind the payroll of some of the other mediocre big companies. Good job. Great coffee. My new fave!”

Highlights

“Founded by three friends, TOAST is British independent chain of coffee houses where you can guarantee to have award-winning coffee and tasty treats, all served with a smile. As proud supporters of local, we work with other independent businesses to supply the freshest and highest-quality ingredients for our menu. We choose local over corporate, opting to work with small British firms, reducing both food miles and helping the British economy. We also understand that we have the power to make positive change too. We use 100% recyclable paper cups, offer sustainable options, and ensure that none of our waste goes to landfill. Even our used coffee grounds become fertiliser for plants. We'll toast to that! 🖤”
