About The Oak Tree Coffee House

The Oak Tree Coffee House is a coffee shop at 4 Highwoods Square in the Highwoods area of Colchester, close to a Tesco. The team serves at the table, so food and drinks are brought to you. The menu leans on hot food, starting with large sausage rolls that come with small portions of ketchup. Two paninis are built around brie, one with red onion and the other with bacon and cranberry. Homemade cakes are also on offer for something sweet. To drink, the coffee shop serves coffee and tea, and decaf coffee is available.

Customer Review Summary

The complaints are sharper and come mostly from parents and one disappointed customer. Two families with young children describe unfriendly staff: one server told a little girl off for touching something, and a 5 year old asking for more ketchup for a large sausage roll had the sauce pot taken away. Another was given half a cup of tap water to share and met with huffing. One reviewer found the sausage rolls rock hard and dry on two visits, and was handed a warm can of coke with no word of warning.

“Been in their 3 times over the past 2 years and first time the sausage roll was ok, but tasted cheap and bready.... The other 2 times, the sausage rolls were not fresh and were rock hard and dry. You dont expect it to be rock hard and dry in place that claim to cook them freshly. Also, last time I went in their and asked for a can of coke and the guy just handed me and warm one and I told him I aint paying £2.50 for a coke that isnt cold when I just can nip to tesco and get a Cold one for alot less. The guy didn't say anything and didnt seem that friendly or smile. You dont just hand someone a WARMMM can of coke when they are paying super high prices, you would say is that alright first... just handed it to me without a smile.”

“This is not a child friendly cafe at all. I have a 3 and 5 year old and visited this cafe today with them!! The staff were unfriendly and quite rude. One of the ladies told my little girl off for touching something, both my children had a sausage roll and they will only eat it with lots of ketchup, the ketchup portions were so tiny you didnt hardly get nothing in them and they had a large sausage roll each so 6 was just not enough between two kids, my 5 year old went up to try and ask for more they took the whole sauce pot away and said no more! I would never ever take my kids here again they really arent adapted to deal with children!! Unlike other cafes who dont mind about sauce and arent rude to children.”

“Unfortunately I wasn’t impressed with the experience I had here. I was out with my two young children and 2 dogs in the school holidays around 9:30am/10am, my daughter went in and kindly and asked for some tap water and the two ladies working were miserable she gave her one 1/2 cup to share with her brother. When I went in again to ask for some more she huffed and puffed. I won’t be returning to buy a coffee here. Which is a shame as when I spotted it I was happy to see somewhere new to try out.”

“A wonderful place for a coffee and food, it is the heart of the Highwoods community. The staff there make you feel very welcome and get to know you. Those small things really do make a difference that makes me love the cafe.”
