About Malt & Anchor Restaurant and Takeaway
Malt & Anchor Restaurant and Takeaway is a fish and seafood restaurant in Cirencester, at 4 Castle St, that also runs as a fish and chips takeaway. Fish and chips is the main order, with plaice and cod loin on the menu, and a beef pie represents the savoury pie side. Onion rings come as an extra. Customer Review Summary
Reviewers return for the fish and chips, praising fresh plaice, crisp batter and chips done as expected. Close behind are the battered sausage, onion rings and beef pie. Service draws repeated warm mentions. The main complaint is value: one diner found a small cod loin and a canned beer overpriced. Another noted loud music, and one visitor left with free mushy peas and a drink.

“Jackie was superb 🙌 Aside the fish and chips, the beef pie was an absolute treat.”

“Kleines, sehr nett eingerichtetes Restaurant welches auch Take Out anbietet. Meine "Small Cod Loin" machte seinem Namen alle Ehre.. Er war überschaubar, jedoch sehr lecker. Bier aus der Dose ist allerdings nicht passend. Was hier nicht stimmt ist das Preis-Leistungsverhältnis. Diese kleine Portion kostet 22 GBP.. die Dose Bier 6 GBP. Noch unglaubwürdiger wird es wenn man diese Preise mit dem Take away Preisen vergleicht. Sorry.. definitiv ein überteuerten Ort.. und es ist Cirencester und nicht London.”

“I can't not award the full five stars as the Malt and Anchor is a real, let's say old-fashioned fish and chip restaurant when such are becoming so few and far between. The food is simply delicious: Despite some arguably excess batter on the fish, our plaice was fresh as anything, and the chips were exactly as one would want them to be. The drinks menu is not extensive, but neither are the prices excessive. Finally, our waiter was excellent - friendly and more helpful than he needed to be when we asked a question that had nothing to do with the restaurant! Our only grouses are that, in one corner, the tables are perhaps a little tightly packed together, which becomes all the more noticeable when the neighbouring table is occupied by very loud people from north America. Secondly, we found the music rather loud and obtrusive, but willingly accept that this might have something to do with the fact that we are not in the first flush of youth.”

“Excellent fish & chips, great service, recommend”

“Easily one of the best fish and chip experiences I've ever had. The food was spectacular! I ordered the battered sausage and chips, and had an unusual request for the sausages to be cut before they were fried (superior in my opinion). Jackie, our server, was able to fulfil my request and I enjoyed the BEST battered sausage of my life. The portions are enormous, so come hungry. Whatever they are doing in the kitchen to create the crispiest batter needs to be studied. The onion rings were outrageously delicious. Excellent from start to finish.”
