About The Long Table

The Long Table is a restaurant and community kitchen in Stroud, on Brimscombe Mills, run on a pay-what-you-want basis. Each meal has a set cost, and contributions let guests who have more pay more. Guests eat at long tables with bench-style seating. The menu is small, with two items and a short service window, and the food is made from locally sourced ingredients. The kitchen sits inside a large repurposed warehouse that also holds a charity shop selling furniture, clothes and children's toys, along with a bicycle project. A table tennis table and a play area are on site too. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often point to the pay-what-you-can community kitchen concept, where those who can afford it contribute more so others can eat for less, with plenty of long tables to share. The food is called tasty and local, and the cake and drinks get praise too. Close behind is the warehouse space, which also holds a charity shop with furniture, clothes and toys, plus a bicycle project. One visitor bought a wooden side table there, and others played table tennis and ping pong. Seating outside by the stream is described as lovely, and the staff as friendly. The caveats are specific. One reviewer found only two menu items, a short service window, pub-priced drinks, bench seats and a chilly room with no effective heating. Another was surprised to see meat on the menu, which felt at odds with the ethical concept. One also wondered how the free meals are directed to legitimate causes. Live drumming is the detail one reviewer closes on.

“One of my favourite places to go. The service is amazing. The staff is so nice. Shout out to Laura. The food- wow! So tasty. The space itself; does a lot of the community. Furniture, bikes, charity, play area. It is close to the canal library. Drinks are nice too. Also i played ping pong for the first time with my dad. Great place !!”

“Such a lovely project. Pas As You Can, in the same building as several other community projects, lovely outside seating area in the sunshine by the river, great vibes, what's not to like!?”

“A fantastic place to visit a community kitchen. You pay what you want. They have a fixed price of what it cost them to make the meal. Plenty of long tables to eat at.”

“Very enjoyable experience. An interesting organisation doing a really worthwhile service. The cake was delicious and the drinks were really, really good. We sat outside by the stream which was lovely to listen to the sound of the water babbling by and the birds in the valley.”

“I love the whole idea of it! It feels thoughtful and ethical, which is why I was surprised to see meat on the menu. It honestly feels a bit at odds with the overall concept. Lovely atmosphere, and it’s great to have different things all under one roof.”
