Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the Sunday roast and the food around it, with the pork, the roast with porchetta and the chicken praised for being cooked well, plus generous extra gravy and no soggy veg or Yorkshires. Close behind are the starters and sides, including a chicken parfait with pickled mushrooms, homemade scotch eggs with a runny yolk, and cheesy leeks, while the sticky toffee pudding, lemon possett and rosemary creme brulee draw praise among the desserts. Fish and chips and the house IPA also get mentions. Friendly, welcoming staff come up repeatedly, as do the relaxed feel, the beer garden and an upstairs room with darts and games used for a large group. A bottomless brunch with a DJ was called brilliant. Criticism is less frequent but specific: one diner found the roast beef tough and the chicken wings far too salty, and another said a booking was disputed on arrival and the kitchen was described as out of food. Even the disappointed lunch party noted the children enjoyed their meals.

“Went here for my husband's birthday lunch. Lovely pub with friendly staff, but unfortunately, the roast dinner was disappointing. The beef was tough and difficult to cut or chew, the roast potatoes were decent but a little dry, and we ordered chicken wings was far too salty. Some bites tasted like a block of salt, while others were more acceptable. It seemed the seasoning hadn’t been mixed evenly throughout the dish. On a positive note, the children enjoyed their meals, and the Scotch eggs were good.”

“Visited the Royal Oak for the first time yesterday with my family and what a delight it was. On arrival we were met by the front of house staff who were friendly and chatty and nothing was to much trouble. The Royal Oak itself is a lovely pub, it was clean and bright and with a good atmosphere. The food which is what we came for was excellent it was fresh and full of flavour and none our party could fault any of it. Couple of highlights were the chicken parfait starter which I had and which was delicious, the parfait was smooth and creamy but the addition of the pickled mushrooms was genius as this took it to a different level. Three of our party had the Sunday lunch and all said it was delicious with my wife saying her pork Sunday lunch was the best pork she had ever tasted. I myself had the fish and chips which again was superb, the batter was really crispy and the fish perfectly cooked, the chips were crunchy on the outside and fluffy in the middle, the dish came with mushy peas, tartar sauce and a curry sauce in small pots and this was great as it meant you could play around with the flavours. One of our party who is vegetarian had the halloumi which she said was really fresh and very filling. I must give a shout out though to the cheesy leeks which came as a side dish with the main courses, they were superb with a good strong taste of cheese and beautifully cooked leeks. As for the desserts some of our party had the lemon possett which they said was sharp, sweet and really refreshing. I myself had the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream which was everything it should be, rich, sticky and very naughty. We really couldn't fault our experience here which was excellent from start to finish and we all left happy and suitably full. Although we live a little distance away we all agreed we cannot wait to return.”

“We made a reservation for our family dinner at 8:30. Restaurant told us we were late when we arrived at 8:32 and said that our reservation was at 8:15pm. They also said they were out of food. Bunch of lazy staff and complete liars. They changed our open table reservations and said we were late. I had a screen shot of our original reservation. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Incredibly rude staff and glad we didn’t drop £400 for our family holiday dinner there. Feel sorry for the owners who hired that staff. Happy to spend our money elsewhere.”

“Food was delicious, we all had the roast dinners! The girls who were serving were very welcoming with a smile. They brought me extra gravy, im northern so like a lot of gravy. Food was cooked well, chicken was moist and there were no soggy veg or Yorkshires! It was nice and quiet which meant we could converse and not have to shout x Altho we were quite replete after the meal we had desserts too which were all extremely delicious. All in all a good ear was had by all x”

“I booked this pub for my brothers 60th birthday. I read reviews and we were not disappointed. The staff were exceptionally helpful jon and his team made my brothers 60th birthday one to remember. Penny was very helpful and attentive. Not sure of the chefs name but the food was cooked to perfection. So thank you. The pub had a very relaxed atmosphere and we didn't feel rushed at all. It's a beautiful place, from the front it doesn't look much, but when you go through its like a tardis, the beer garden is gorgeous. We had a very good experience and I would highly recommend this pub to anyone looking for a quality night of food and drink. Thank you and well done xxx”
