About Stanpit fish and chips

Stanpit Fish and Chips is a fish and chips takeaway at 186 Stanpit in Christchurch, open Tuesday to Saturday and closed on Sundays and Mondays. The fish is battered and cooked fresh to order, with cod, haddock and hake all on the menu alongside chips. Opposite the shop sit a park and a cricket ground, and customers carry their food there to eat. Benches outside give people a place to sit while they wait. Orders can be phoned in when the staff are free to take the call, and messages through Google are another route when the team can reply. Payment is by cash or card. Roadside parking is close to the shop, and it gets busy at peak times such as early evenings and hot-weather days.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the fish, singling out crispy batter and flaky, freshly cooked cod and hake, with chips described as not greasy and not overly crispy. Close behind is friendly counter service, and one reviewer describes a chatty, holiday-like atmosphere among locals and holidaymakers waiting outside. One group organiser says a large cycle group order for 25 arrived in boxes with names written on. Others mention chicken chunks with curry sauce, served in bags, and benches, parking and a park with a cricket ground opposite for eating.

“Before you place your order check how long it's going to be , we waited an hour before we got ours. People were asking for refunds because of the wait time. If you have a big order come in , it might be prudent & good customer relation to let your customers know .”

“This is the third time we have used Stanpit Fish and Chips for our annual cycle group ride. Sean was incredibly helpful with the organisation for a large group of 25, all with different orders, beautifully presented in boxes with names written on. Will definitely be back next year for our cycle group and use for other times too.”

“Usually great food. On this occasion cooked by Asian cashier and was very poor, fish overdone, tough, chips, warm not hot. This is an edited review because the owner, who takes reviews very seriously took the trouble to call me, personally apologised and said next time, he would cook together with an arrangement. I was impressed by and will continue using.”

“Had a really delicious standard hake & chips (£11.40) from here yesterday evening. Very good portion of both hake & chips. Lovely crispy batter on the hake. Chips perfectly cooked & slightly crispy but not overly so. Not at all greasy. All cooked fresh & to order. The wait wasn't too long. Decent amount of salt & vinegar too; so often chip shops are rather mean with the condiments! The young female assistant (Sophie according to my receipt) was so friendly & engaging with all the customers despite it being a busy early evening & was polite, efficient & made every customer feel valued & welcomed. Service such as hers makes an incredible difference to one's customer experience. Customers were chatting to one another inside & outside the shop whilst waiting, locals & holidaymakers alike. It was such a friendly, holiday-like atmosphere. Quality of food, service and atmosphere were all excellent. I shall certainly be returning soon.”

“Always a bit of a punt finding a decent chippy near the seaside, there is so much choice available and they all will have good reviews. A lot of the time you leave disappointed. This exceeded my expectations so much that I had to leave a review! Service was winding down for the afternoon which means I got a freshly cooked cod which made a massive difference. Batter was crispy, the cod was flakey and perfectly cooked. Chips were just how I like them, not too soggy but not overly crispy as well. Only issue, which is nothing to do with this chippy, was finding a good location to eat them. We tried to get to a sea view down one of the roads behind the chippy but it was all private. We ended up watching the local cricket team on the ground opposite. Made for a very pleasant lunch. Highly recommend.”
