Quick info
About The Fox And Raven
On Barnes Mill Rd in Chelmsford, The Fox And Raven is a pub in a building that began as the Barnes Farm farmhouse and appears in Springfield records from 1851. The kitchen runs a separate Monday to Friday menu alongside a classic menu, with fish and chips and a pie of the day served with seasonal veg. A bar snacks menu includes a cheese garlic flatbread, and Sunday lunch is on offer too. Cask ales are poured at the bar, and an open fire gives the pub a focal point for cooler days. The setting looks across the meadows, which suits a drink after a meal. The pub is open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Friendly, helpful staff come up in most reviews, with servers described as prompt and understanding of requests such as dressing on the side. Food draws praise too: the pie of the day with seasonal veg, a turkey roast, fish and chips, steak, curry, a burger, a fish finger sandwich, and a cheese garlic flatbread from the bar snacks. Reviewers also mention views across the meadows, a warm cottage feel, an open fire, and terrace and grass seating outside. Complaints are fewer but specific. One diner with a booking reports waiting nearly 90 minutes for mains after walk-ins were served first, with a waitress rude to another couple and managers staying at the bar. Another found the full English cold, with tough bacon and sausages. One reviewer's Caesar salad chicken was dry, and a drinks voucher code did not work. One diner who asked on a Saturday for a dish from the weekday menu was accommodated.

“Great atmosphere for Sunday lunch. Relaxed atmosphere and good food, all with amazing views across the meadows. All the staff were friendly and helpful, particularly Maisie our server who was outstanding.”

“I went to the Fox and Raven with my family for dinner this evening. I had booked a table for 6.15pm It wasnt that busy at the time we arrived so we were seated and served drinks in good time, and the starters arrived in good time also. It started to get busier with walk-ins and then everything changed! The service was very poor. They started prioritising the walk-ins over the bookings which is not on. It was sooooo slow. And one of the waitresses was very rude to another couple who were waiting a long time for their main meal. We ended up waiting nearly 90 minutes for our main meals which is ridiculous! The managers did not once come into the restaurant to check on things or help, they just hid at the bar. We didnt get offered more drinks, we had to ask...twice! The food we had was actually very yummy, but just not worth the wait at all. Not impressed and wont be going back.”

“We went for a quiet birthday meal on a Saturday and asked for something that was only on their Mon to Friday menu. They accommodated us and couldn't do more. They were genuinely excellent service throughout. Highly recommended, and Vintage Inns if you're reading this put your fantastic Lasagne on the classic menu all week!!”

“Great restaurant with a large outside area at the back on the terrace or also seating on the grass to the side and front. The service was impeccable and Vanusa who served us was so nice, helpful and understanding of our nuances, dressing on the side etc. I had Ceaser salad and it tasted good but my chicken was dry unfortunately but the cheese garlic flatbread from the bar snacks was amazing. My friend really enjoyed her fish finger sandwich and that looked so tasty. Lots of options to choose from and great selection of drinks even 0% gin which is a bonus. Would recommend and definitely head back again another time.”
