About The Red Lion

The Red Lion is a pub on High St in Cambridge, with a private dining room that suits groups and a back garden that includes a kids' play area. Inside, open fires and fairy lights run throughout, and piped music plays. The kitchen serves a roast dinner, with a vegetarian roast on the menu as well. Staff bring orders to the table rather than taking them at the bar, so there is no need to queue for drinks or food. Dogs are welcome, which makes the pub an easy stop for walkers with their pets.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the food, with a vegetarian roast dinner and Sunday roast sides singled out as delicious, alongside a garden several describe as stunning or beautiful. Many call the pub cosy and full of character, and one notes it is very dog friendly. A wedding group in the garden says everyone was served quickly. Service splits sharply. Some find the staff kind and helpful, while others describe most of the team as uninterested. Two lower reviews give the clearest complaints: one family was refused food and hot drinks before the advertised kitchen closing time, and another waited 20 minutes for anyone to take an order, was told orders couldn't be placed at the bar, and had food arrive before drinks. Others mention chewy beef, a "half chicken" that was only a thigh, piped music, and kitchen clatter near tables. Several call the prices high, and one asked for the service charge to be removed from the bill.

“My niece and nephew got married short notice and decided to have a quick gathering at the Red Lion at Grantchester the staff could not have been kindly a and more helpful. The food was really nice looked lovely and tasted great we were quite a big group but we all got served quickly we was in The Gardens which was stunning on such a beautiful day thank you to all the staff for the help that you gave making it a special day for them”

“Lovely little pub, the food was amazing. The drinks were lovely and food selection was excellent. Lovely people working too! Food came fast. Definitely come back again! The only downfall was the price for 2 adults and a child, I got 15% off luckily with blue light and we asked for the service charge to be taken off. I thought pubs normally apply this with larger groups, but they charge it anyway…”

“Food let down by poor front of house service and attitude. We pre-booked a table but on arrival asked to move to a table closer to the kids play area outside, which they said was fine. Then no one took our order for 20 minutes. When we went to the bar we were told we weren't allowed to order at the bar, then we were made to move to the picnic table next to the one we'd sat at because apparently they didn't serve food at that particular one. Eventually placed an order... Took 50 minutes and food arrived before drinks. Paying was another palaver. Very poor management, who seem to be permanently short staffed. Good was very good but expensive and not worth the hassle.”

“Not sure if our experience was the rule or the exception, but here's how it went: we were about halfway home from a long day out with 2 young kids, we looked up a place to have a small bite to eat and drinks on the way home, we went with this one as we saw it had a play area for kids, who still had the energy of a thousand suns and the kitchen was still open. Got there 20:25 (Saturday) to ask if we could come in, if they were still serving food (asked for starters or maybe sides) and if the kids area was available. The place looked very quiet, there were maybe 2/3 tables taken? It looked clean and it was beautifully decorated. I was told the kitchen had closed, and was not offered anything at all, not even the olives or any other item that doesn't require cooking equipment, dessert, absolutely no effort to offer anything at all. Apart from one young waiter who approached me with a smile while I was waiting for the lady to go check if the kitchen would honour the kitchen opening times advertised on the website, the other 3 members of staff I encountered seemed uninterested in representing hospitality. I don't want a red carpet, but equally, I don't want to spend time and money where I am made to feel like a burden. Tried ordering coffee to keep me going for the rest of the drive, was told no coffee, no hot drinks. We spent £13 on half a cider (it was delicious, a piña colada one), half a shandy and 2 kids carton juices; the price seemed fair. I can't recall if there was music on, but the place was quite big, I remember the fairy lights everywhere gave it a very relaxing touch while walking through to the garden. The kids area was at the back, the whole place was surrounded by green and was quite peaceful. The table next to ours had a couple of empty drinks and a few dirty napkins scattered on the grass around it. We had been going since 6.30am that day and I was exhausted; all I remember about The Red Lion is an uninterested and unwelcoming atmosphere with unavailable food over half an hour before their advertised kitchen closing time.”
