About The Mandarin Fusion
The Mandarin Fusion is a Chinese restaurant in Bournemouth at 196-198 Old Christchurch Rd, run as a restaurant, bar and lounge since 1968. The menu is primarily Chinese and adds Japanese, Mongolian and Thai dishes, including katsu curry, under an Asian fusion approach. Banquet selections follow the Chinese banqueting tradition, and a Veggie Feast for four gives tables a shared vegetarian option. The evening menu presents Far Eastern dishes in a modern style, built on older recipes. Reservations are required.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise generous, fresh, quickly served Chinese dishes, with the crispy shredded beef nest, Singapore Noodles and lettuce lamb singled out, and a Veggie Feast for four called delicious. Close behind is friendly, welcoming service, and the Asian fusion menu, which adds Japanese, Mongolian and Thai dishes, is called comprehensive and reasonably priced, though one notes recent years have grown expensive. Banquet selections suit large family groups. Criticisms are specific: one diner found the honey roast pork with peanuts dry and needing a sauce and received plain rice instead of coconut rice, and another thought the Katsu curry a bit salty. The sharpest complaint comes from a regular who found a service charge on the receipt after tipping the manager in cash, heard nothing after contacting the restaurant twice, and will not return. Another diner was allowed to take leftovers home and received a Valentine's treat at the end of the meal.

“Coming to this restaurant has ruined all other Chinese Restaurants for me. I can easily say that no other Chinese restaurant will come close to The Mandarin Fusion. Everything was cooked to perfection with the perfect blend of seasoning. I don’t write many reviews, but given the quality of the food and the attentive and friendly service here, the experience was exceptional and it was simply deserving of 5 stars.”

“One of very few constants along the Old Christchurch Road. Been coming here for years (since the mid 1980’s) although these days only when I am that side of town, which is not as often as it used to be. But it’s always good to know that the Mandarin still exists. I dread the day that it disappears. The food has always been top notch in quality and taste and yes, in the last few years it has gotten expensive like everywhere else. But the experience of coming here makes for a pleasant evening with friends. The menu has remained a consistent pulling point and it remains the best in Bournemouth after its closest competitor closed quite some years ago.”

“A gem of a place. Genuinely lovely team of welcoming staff. Spotless & well laid out dining & bar areas. Great menu, very comprehensive & good portions of beautifully presented, piping hot, delicious, fresh food. Efficient & friendly service with a bit of banter!! I can highly recommend this fabulous restaurant.. 👌”

“Had a lovely family meal for 10 adults & 3 children (including a baby). There are a number of banquet selections on the menu & 8 of our party opted for these. The price inc drinks came in just over £50 per person for this option. Other members paid £20-30 per person choosing from normal menu. The staff were very attentive & we spent a very relaxing 2.5 hours. The food was very good & I would definitely return if in Bournemouth again. Thank you for a lovely evening.”

“This is one of our favourite restaurants, albeit we only visit when we are on holiday each year. The service is very friendly and attentive. The food is delicious. Especially, the lettuce lamb. Plus, all the dishes are reasonably priced. There are some minor improvements we’d love to see; - The honey roast pork with peanuts was dry and needed a sauce. - We ordered coconut rice and received plain rice. We keep coming back because of the service and the food.”
