About Picnic Park Deli

Picnic Park Deli is an outdoor café on Westover Rd in Bournemouth, opened in 2016 in Westover Gardens with sea views across the Lower Gardens. It sits a few steps from the Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre. The menu centres on grilled cheese melts, made on sourdough and hand pressed to order. The brunch and afternoon offering adds the Proud Mary toastie, and real dairy ice cream covers the sweeter side. Cakes and flapjacks are on display for anyone after a treat. Ordering runs on a buzzer, and customers collect their food from the counter in paper containers once it is ready. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the outdoor setting among trees, with views, an aviary nearby and birdsong, where iced lattes, coffees and ice cream floats are the usual order. Close behind is the food: the Proud Mary toastie, a chili egg and halloumi brunch bun, avocado toast with a yogurt board, and a grilled sandwich one diner counts among the best they have had. Others mention a fruity flapjack, the cakes, an iced strawberry drink with cream, and ice cream enjoyed while a live music duo played on a weekend afternoon. Staff are called friendly, and several say food arrived quickly. The main complaint comes from one breakfast visitor who found the flat white very poor, like milk with a very mild coffee flavour, and who was only pointed to a bin when asking where to return the paper containers and metal cutlery. Repeat visits come up too, including one pair who returned later the same day for more drinks and another who came two days in a row.

“Had breakfast on 6th August Unfortunately, our experience at Picnic Park Deli was disappointing. The seating is outside on park benches, which we had no problem with, although the area and benches could have been cleaner. Most importantly, the flat white was very poor. The coffee had almost no taste — it was basically like drinking milk with a very mild coffee flavour. We ordered smoked salmon on toast and avocado on toast. We were given a buzzer and asked to collect the food when it was ready, which was absolutely fine. However, when you’re serving food outside in a garden, particularly something like smoked salmon, I think the food needs some kind of protective covering to keep flies away. By the time I went to collect our food, there was already a fly sitting on the salmon. The food was served in flimsy paper containers, but with metal cutlery. After eating, as a courtesy, we thought we’d take everything back to the counter. We asked where we should leave it and were simply pointed towards a bin. I wasn’t sure whether we were expected to throw everything into the bin, including the metal cutlery. I decided not to do that, left the metal cutlery at the counter and left. Overall, the poor coffee, unclean surroundings , uncovered food outside and the way everything was served made this a very disappointing experience.”

“Stumbled upon this hidden gem whilst walking. Stopped by on Saturday afternoon. Heard live music being played from far away, so we decided to check it out. Ordered an ice cream and sat down to watch the live music duo (Soul Tides was the band). Music was amazing. Would recommend visiting, especially on weekend afternoons when the live music is on.”

“Found this little gem after asking a local if they could recommend a nice independent coffee spot! Our coffees were really good and it’s a lovely place to sit in relaxing surroundings. We had a fruity flapjack but all the cakes & sweet treats looked great. Staff were very nice; so much so that we returned later in the day for more drinks. 🙂 Definitely worth a visit if you are ever in bournemouth.”

“This is the perfect place. The atmosphere is filled with palm trees and flowers, the staff are very friendly. You can get ice cream ,milkshakes, coffe, toast and iced teas. The perfect mix of people. Also, the Iced Strawberry With Cream is to die for. No litter. 2026. Just A.M.A.Z.I.N.G”

“One of the best grilled sandwiches we’ve ever had. So tasty. A nice vibe at this little cafe. We will be back!”
