Quick info
About Harborne Fish Bar
Harborne Fish Bar, a fish and chips takeaway on Northfield Road in Birmingham, prepares gluten-free fish and chips fresh to order, so customers avoiding gluten can eat the same battered fish as everyone else. The menu runs wider than the name suggests, with large cod and chips among the regular orders and doner kebab and chicken dishes also available. The team handles allergen requests, including nut free with traces accounted for, so it helps to raise these when ordering. The business is family run and recently changed hands after the previous owners retired. Orders are placed at the counter with no booking involved, and payment is cash only, worth knowing before you arrive. High chairs are on hand for families eating with young children, and fried items are sometimes held on a heated counter when things get busy, so ask if you want yours straight from the fryer. It trades Monday to Saturday and stays closed on Sundays.

Customer Review Summary
Large cod and chips is what draws the praise here, described repeatedly as crisp, golden and flaky, with several reviewers noting the fish is cooked fresh to order. Close behind is the gluten free option, singled out by a coeliac diner as the best they have had, alongside comments that the counter takes care with allergens including nut traces. The owner and staff come in for warm mentions, one visitor recalling being welcomed in minutes before closing and having a fresh cod and chips cooked from scratch. Set against that, a run of unhappy reviews describes hard batter with little fish beneath it, chips called a soggy tasteless mess, a donner kebab tasting cheap and fatty, and one order of chicken tikka arriving as cold, dry Mediterranean chicken. A longtime customer links the drop to a change of owners and reports binning an entire order, including a bottle of vinegar found with its seal already broken.

“Having used this chip shop for a number of years I considered it one of the best fish and chip shops in the area. I never had any issues with the quality at all. When the previous owners retired I was assured that nothing was going to change. For the first few times I used them it didn’t. Then came the food last night, it was possibly the worst fish and chips I’ve ever had. The chips were best described as a tasteless soggy mess, the fish was predominantly hard batter, with a metallic taste to the fish. We also purchased a bottle of vinegar which when we returned home found it had already had its seal broken so was unusable. Very disappointing that the entire order went into the bin. I wish the new owners good luck, but we will not be using them again.”

“Chips were alright. I asked for chicken tikka. I was given Mediterranean chicken. Not what I asked for. Chicken was chicken cold and dry. I was lied to . Must remember not to go again. Remember i asked for chicken tikka. No other chips mix like ketchup that. Waste of my money for small chicken tikka 8 pound.”

“If you’re in Birmingham and craving proper fish and chips, Harborne Fish Bar is a must-visit. We stopped by during our trip and were really impressed. The staff were warm and welcoming, which made the experience even better. We ordered the large cod and chips, and it was delicious—perfectly cooked with a crisp, golden batter and a generous portion. As tourists, finding a spot like this felt like a real win. Great food and friendly service—highly recommended!”
