About Actress & Bishop

Actress & Bishop is a pub in Birmingham at 36 Ludgate Hill, where live music is a regular feature, including ska bands and early Saturday evening sets. Large screens show football and other sport. Upstairs, a function area hosts private events for groups, and a balcony adds a second space, with an 11pm drinking rule in force there. The food menu includes a bratwurst dog and a bacon burger with chips. Friday and Saturday are the busiest days, and door staff are posted at the entrance.

Customer Review Summary

Live music anchors the praise for this pub, with reviewers pointing to an early Saturday evening set and a ska act they return to, alongside a welcoming crowd and an atmosphere they call comfortable and relaxed. Bar staff are described as friendly and polite, and the beer selection is called decent. The few who ate single out a bratwurst dog and a bacon burger with crisp chips, served hot. One reviewer calls the drinks spenny. The main complaint is the door staff. A few describe bouncers who block the entrance and act aggressively and unreasonably. One says a bouncer made an autistic friend lift his leg to prove he was fine, and another was shouted at over the 11pm drinking rule after asking to take a drink to the balcony. One reviewer, by contrast, calls security friendly. A guest at an upstairs private function reports a bartender shouting at them over a glass of water and felt it was racially motivated. Another bartender then brought a glass and apologised.

“Possibly the best pub in the area maybe even in town. Can get super busy on Friday & Saturday. Staff and security always are friendly and welcoming. Haven’t tried the food yet so my review can’t account for that”

“Overall its an ok place, the bar staff and actual venue is pretty good. Unfortunately for myself and a lot of others the bouncers attitudes really ruin what could be a really nice local bar. I’ve had to reason with the bouncers far too many times after being approached aggressively. Rather than talking to us on a reasonable level, its always quite aggressive and really unreasonable. One bouncer made my autistic friend lift his leg up to prove that he was ok, yet when we looked at him confused he told him to stand to the side. I had to explain that my friend had autism and the bouncer categorically said ‘any problems i’m coming to you’ Another time it was a group of 5 guys and we were straight up told no to entry, i asked if we could sit on the balcony and the bouncer said yes, i asked if we could get a drink to sit on the balcony. Unaware of the 11pm drinking rule, yet he started shouting at me and again choosing the aggressive and unreasonable approach. I seem to witness or experience a really bad experience with these bouncers with what could be a pretty good bar without these problems. Its pretty authoritarian from them. Overall though, bar staff are lovely and venue is pretty good”
