About Mona's Cafe

Breakfast anchors the menu at Mona's Cafe, a cafe on Stewartstown Road in Belfast, where Ulster fry plates come with potato bread and wheaten bread and the kitchen will swap one for the other on request. Cooked breakfasts and fry options make up much of what is served, with eggs on the plates, while mains and drinks cover lunch later in the day. Coffee is poured too, cappuccino included. The room is set up for sitting down, with staff taking orders and serving at the tables, and there is no booking system, so customers arrive and take a seat. Outdoor seating gives the choice of eating outside, high chairs make space for families with young children, and a step-free entrance serves visitors with mobility needs. Doors open daily through the daytime, and walkers heading back from the Colin Glen forest area make it a stop.

Customer Review Summary

The cooked breakfast anchors most visits, with one regular calling the mega fry perfection and others singling out the range of breakfast options. Close behind is the value, described again and again as reasonable for a main and a drink, and the staff, called lovely and friendly by walkers stopping in after a trek through the glen, where one server offered a visiting dog a bowl of water. Also named are the half'n'half chicken curry, half chips and half rice, and a cappuccino one reviewer rated the best of the morning; one notes the building itself is dated. Two accounts run sharply the other way. One describes stone cold food, coffee likened to dirty water, cutlery that arrived dirty after being asked for twice, and a smell of marijuana from the kitchen, that reviewer pointing instead to the deli across the street. Another reports leaving before ordering after seeing a man they took to be the owner vaping at a table and speaking harshly to staff, leaving one visibly upset.

“I dont usually review places but this place needed a special mention I visited after a walk in the forest last week and I cant speak on the food as I didnt stay long enough to eat anything after witnessing the way the manager speaks to his staff there wasnt a chance I was going to spend my money in this establishment. When I first went in I didnt even realise this man had anything to do with the cafe as he was sitting at a table like a customer smoking a vape which if I'm not wrong is illegal ?? In the 15 mins we were looking at the menu I witnessed this man speak to a young waitress like she was an idiot I actually had to double take because I couldnt believe my ears the tone of voice this fully grown man was speaking to teenage girl in then I seen him speak to an older staff member and leave her visibly upset I didnt hear what he said because the noise of the two radios 6 feet apart playing different stations was already driving me out the door but when I seen that poor woman holding back tears for the way he spoke to her leaning into her face and pointing at her I lifted my things and left immediately but not before clarifying with another customer that that man was actually the owner?? If it hadnt been for my friend begging me not to I would have had a go at him there and then ... absolutely disgusting man clearly doesnt know how to run a business and shouldnt be there.”
