About Karibuni Zanzibar

Karibuni Zanzibar is a grill and East African restaurant in Barking, at 2-4 East St, serving food it describes as Swahili and Zanzibari. The urojo soup, a Zanzibari mix, comes with a choice of chicken, beef or mixed meat, and the fried cassava and bajias are served separately. Mishkaki comes in beef or chicken and arrives with two sauces, a pilipili sauce and a tamarind sauce called ukwaju. Chicken shawarma and beef shawarma sit alongside the grill items, and tamarind juice is on the drinks list. The beef mishkaki can be ordered with chips.

Customer Review Summary

Beef mishkaki with chips is the most repeated draw, described as soft and delicious, topped with pilipili and tamarind ukwaju sauce. Close behind are a large Urojo soup with fried cassava and bajias, and chicken and beef shawarma. Complaints centre on rude counter staff, one said to mock a customer repeatedly, plus unanswered phone calls, unavailable items and a switch from the grill to hotpots and microwaves.

“I was craving Urojo soup. Googled and ended up coming to this restaurant. You get the option either chicken or beef or mix meats. I chose beef. Also asked the chef to make it spicy. I was suprised the portion was XL for a good price 2 people can enjoy this meal. The flavours were mouth watering and very delicious, sour from the limes and spicy from the spices everything was aligned really well. The fried casava and bajias came separate and added a lovely texture to the soup. Would have loved more bajias than only 2. All the the ingredients complimented each other. The tamarind juice was sweet just like the ones I had back in zanzibar. If you want swahili soul food this is the place. You would definitely not be let down. Will return again with family and friends to try other things on the menu. Asante sana”

“I am from Tanzania and was craving these local food like beef mishkaki and chips and chicken mishkaki. I would say it was really delicious and worth travelling all the way. It took me 1.5 hrs just to get there by train. Service was fast. Mishkaki was soft, loved their pilipili and tamarind ukwaju sauce on top. Thanks to Salim”

“Extremely disappointing customer service. I went to Karibuni Zanzibar in Barking, ordered food, and was waiting while keeping an eye on my bus, which was due to arrive in about 2 minutes. The staff member called out food for another customer, so I simply asked, “Is that mine?” Instead of giving me a straightforward answer, he repeatedly said, “You’re here just for the vibe.” He said it 10–15 times, in a way that felt like he was deliberately mocking me. I was a paying customer who had ordered food. I don’t understand why I was spoken to like that. Being busy is understandable, but mocking a customer and repeatedly making sarcastic comments is completely unacceptable. Basic respect and professionalism should be expected when dealing with customers. Very poor attitude and extremely disappointing customer service. I certainly won’t be rushing back.”

“It’s a real shame with this business , I share this review for them to hopefully work on these frustrations Food is great however they never answer the phone calls , and when they do it’s mixed messages When you arrive there’s always this or that not available , really frustrating as a customer and I genuinely hope they improve on these issues as I would be returning a lot more if these issues wasn’t present”

“The chef behind counter is rude not the main one who everyone sees on tiktok the older one. They have started to use hotpots and microwaves instead of using the grill like they used to when they had a van so I won't be going back there sorry 😐”
