About The Red Bull

Sunday lunch anchors the kitchen at The Red Bull, a gastropub on Mackenders Lane in Aylesford, where the roast arrives with roast potatoes, vegetables, red cabbage, stuffing and Yorkshire pudding. A plant-based version runs alongside the traditional plate, built around butternut squash with vegan stuffing and its own Yorkshire puddings, so a mixed table can order the same meal together. Beyond the roast, the menu runs to three courses with a set lunch option sitting next to the main list, and low and slow roasted pork belly and steak both feature as mains. The village pub setting keeps a mixed, unmatched decor and a fireplace in the room, and dogs are welcome. Reservations are required, and tables can be booked in advance. The pub opens Tuesday to Sunday and closes on Mondays, with a limited number of parking spaces on site.

Customer Review Summary

The Sunday roast dominates, with diners singling out the low and slow roasted pork belly and its trimmings, roast potatoes, red cabbage and stuffing, and one reviewer calls the roast potatoes the standout. Vegans report a butternut squash option with roasties and plant based stuffing, and the kitchen making plant based puddings to match. Close behind, several praise other menu items: a Sri Lankan cashew and squash curry, the burger, and steak that one describes as textbook. Starters and desserts also draw mentions, from whitebait and smoked mackerel pate to a rich chocolate brownie with honeycomb and Eton mess. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, polite and chatty, and the pub itself as cosy and rustic. Two temper this: one found the roast could have been hotter and pricier than other pubs, and one describes a long wait for menus and drinks with overcooked, sparse food from young staff who seemed unsure. One notes an outdoor garden pod that stayed cosy through wet, windy weather.

“Waited ages for a menu and drinks. Very young staff all very polite but they didn’t seem to know what they were doing. Poor menu. Food was over cooked. And sparse Won’t be going back”

“Booked for a catch up with friends and to meet their new baby, and of course most importantly to have a Sunday roast. Apparently this place has just changed ownership, but this hasn't affected the running of the pub at all. On our visit it was very quiet, and for a while we we're there only ones eating, which we can only surmise is due to the change, and possibly it's village location, and honestly that surprised us as the pub is beautifully rustic, and a perfect spot for a Sunday lunch. I opted for a full three courses, which filled me up for the rest of the day. I had whitebait for starter, which I completely forgot to photograph, but was fresh tasting and a decent sized portion! My partner had chorizo and that was gorgeous! My main I had the pork belly, which came with potatoes, vegetable, Yorkshire pudding, red cabbage, and a little bit of stuffing. We also shared a cauliflower cheese between us. The roast was fantastic and personally the roast potatoes stole the show for me, done exactly how I like them! For dessert I had the chocolate brownie and ice cream, with honeycomb. Mouthwateringly rich and beautifully presented too! Sadly my belly could not finish it off after punishing it with copious amounts in the first two courses. Parking on site too so you don't have to worry about finding a space in the village.”

“Cosy little pub, often more busy with drinkers than people eating and seems to have a strong local following. Been here a few times for food however and it’s been delicious. The burger in particular is lovely. My wife had a steak and it was textbook. Staff are really friendly.”

“We had Sunday lunch in the pod in the garden. The weather was wet, windy, and chilly, but the pod was still cosy. Food was nice and staff were friendly. Parking is a bit limited.”

“My local pub. Can be OK, but today was great. Our server was personable and chatty. My friend had the 3 course lunch set menu, starter, smoked mackerel and horseradish pate with toasted sourdough bread. More than one piece would have been appreciated. Main, low and slow roasted pork belly, and Eton Mess for dessert. I didn't have a starter, skate wing from the main menu, and supposedly tiramasu, just a chocolate mousse with a fabulous brandy base. I didn't have the coffee or cream top. We had a lovely lunch and made extra special by using my loyalty card.”
