Quick info
About Lamplight Restaurant Ltd
Lamplight Restaurant Ltd is a modern British restaurant at 4 Victoria Sq in the centre of Ashbourne, housed in a building dating from 1493. The small room has exposed beams, a fireplace and a wall-to-wall window with seating along it, so diners eat in a very old building with a view onto the street. The kitchen cooks Anglo-French dishes from a short seasonal menu that changes through the year. A baked goat cheese starter opens the menu, mains include Miso Blackened Salmon alongside steak and duck, and the Spiced Plum Crumble is one of the desserts. Allergen indicators are marked on the menu, which lists dairy free and vegan options, including a vegetarian moussaka. Reservations are required.

Customer Review Summary
The Vegetarian Moussaka is the dish diners raise most, one calling it unbelievable and another, who doesn't like quinoa, saying it surprised them with how delicious it was. Close behind are the starters, the Baked Goats Cheese and the tempura prawns, and the mains of steak cooked to perfection and salmon, either Miso Blackened or Coconut and Macadamia crusted. Desserts earn their own praise, including the Spiced Plum Crumble, the boozy Chocolate St Emilion, the Lemon Posset and the Chocolate & Amaretto Trifle. Reviewers describe friendly, welcoming staff, a cosy atmosphere and a wall of windows that draws the eye. One notes that allergen indicators on the menu make vegan and dairy free dishes easy to find. The one lukewarm review found the food nice throughout but describes a small seasonal menu and a small wine list, though it also calls the portions good. Another diner celebrating a birthday was allowed to bring their own cake and have it as dessert.

“Absolutely delicious meal. We both chose the steak, which was cooked to perfection. Best meal we've had in a long time! Lovely small restaurant with such a cosy atmosphere and kind, welcoming staff. 10/10. Perfect.”

“We visited Lamplight Restaurant on Wednesday 8 July, and from start to finish it was a fantastic experience. Booking was quick and easy by email, and after hearing so many good things about the restaurant, we’re pleased to say the glowing reviews were absolutely justified. For starters, we had the Chilli Prawns in Tempura Batter and the Baked Goats Cheese; both were beautifully presented and packed with flavour. For our mains, we chose the Thai Fishcake and the Vegetarian Moussaka. The Thai Fishcake was excellent, but the Vegetarian Moussaka was simply unbelievable! To finish, we couldn’t resist the Chocolate & Amaretto Trifle and the Lemon Posset. Both desserts were the perfect end to a superb meal. The food was outstanding, the staff were friendly, welcoming and attentive without being overbearing, and the location in the heart of Ashbourne makes it an absolute gem. If you’re visiting Ashbourne or the surrounding area, we can’t recommend Lamplight highly enough. It’s definitely worth a visit, and we’ll certainly be returning later this year. Great food, great staff and a great location. 👍”

“What a lovely restaurant, food and service was exceptional. We had starters and main courses but the desserts coming out looked amazing. I had tempura prawns to start followed by duck with wilted greens and dauphinois potatoes. Absolutely delicious.”

“Visited on 22nd July for my 25th birthday with my partner as a surprise dinner. Great service by the lady, didn't have the opportunity to get her name but she was brilliant start to finish. I ordered the baked goat cheese (V) as starter, it was rich with flavours! Everything paired very well together and as an individual ingredient! Then, got the vegetarian moussaka, which was vegan friendly and I don't really like quinoa but this dish surprised me with how delicious it was!! 😋 I would highly recommend this place for a delicious meal or maybe dinner date, we visited this place from Plymouth and if we're back, would love to come again! X”
