About The Carpenters Arms
On Upper Village Rd in Ascot, The Carpenters Arms is a French restaurant run by French proprietors serving a Gallic menu from an 18-dish selection. Duck confit and garlic-butter escargot are recurring dishes, alongside a bistro-style range that extends to desserts such as sticky toffee pudding, jam sponge and chocolate brownie. Seating includes an outdoor covered section and a beer garden, giving diners the option to eat outside, and a step-free entrance suits visitors with mobility needs. Families with young children are catered for with high chairs, and dogs are welcome on site. Staff attend directly to tables rather than operating a counter service. It opens daily, and reservations are recommended.

Customer Review Summary
Duck confit draws the most mentions, with several diners praising it as delicious and superbly done, though one longtime patron found it recently gone tasteless, dry, and unseasoned, and a waitress reportedly brushed off the complaint by suggesting they tell the chef next time. Close behind, the escargot in garlic butter and the French onion soup earn repeated praise, alongside steak rossini and the beef stew and grilled duck ordered by a group. Several reviewers also single out attentive, named front of house staff for warm, professional service, and a few mention Sunday lunch and outdoor beer garden seating favorably. A recurring complaint is inconsistent seasoning and value: multiple diners describe bland, underseasoned starters and one calls the food "poor value for money" given high prices, while another notes the house wine selection had disappeared and macarons arrived overly soft. Bread and butter is called out by one reviewer as the one unchanged, reliable constant since new ownership took over.

“Excellent experience at this restaurant, run by French people. Very nice choice, really tasty and the staff was really nice.”

“Unfortunately very poor value for money. This is an example of the restaurant trade in its deaththrows, overcome by high overheads and disappearing customers. Very attractive place, nice staff, very poor food. Completely puts me off eating out anymore. Can do better at home with a ready meal at a fraction of the cost. I wish them well, but not at my expense.”

“A lovely pub restaurant offering decent French cuisine. Tried their roasted chicken. The meat was tender. Overall a fantastic dinner venue.”

“We came here tonight with a group of friends, and everything was absolutely wonderful. I had the chicken dish and the French onion soup, both of which were perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious. My friends ordered the beef stew and the grilled duck, and they loved their meals as well. We all thoroughly enjoyed not only the food but also the lovely atmosphere. And we can’t forget to mention the outstanding hospitality—the staff were incredibly welcoming, attentive, and friendly. Thank you for making our evening so enjoyable. We will definitely be coming back!”
