About Sonnet Restaurant

Sonnet Restaurant is a fine dining restaurant in Alnwick, found at 41 Bondgate Without, where a 14-course tasting menu is served in a dining room of just 8 tables. The chefs explain each course to guests, so the evening works as a guided walk through the kitchen's cooking. Courses include pea panna cotta with smoked eel and potato risotto, then a Baron Bigod cheese course that leads into a dessert of passionfruit, miso and white chocolate. A wine pairing or wine flight is offered alongside the tasting menu for those who want a glass matched to each stage. Lunchtime brings a shorter menu for guests who want less than the full 14 courses. With so few tables, covers stay limited to a small number of guests at each sitting. Reservations are required.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers center on the 14-course tasting menu, calling it exceptional and beautifully presented, with several saying they enjoyed every course. The pea panna cotta with smoked eel and the potato risotto are singled out as sensational, and the closing courses of Baron Bigod and a bowl of passionfruit, miso and white chocolate also stay in the memory. Wine pairings come close behind, described as well chosen, complementing the food, and explained at the table. The small dining room feels intimate and relaxed, and diners repeatedly describe the service as friendly, warm and informative, with the chefs guiding guests through each course without being patronising. One reviewer found the evening great value, and one lunch visitor notes a shorter menu of nine courses. A solo diner who came for a 60th birthday, apprehensive at first, was handed a birthday card by the team.

“An absolutely spectacular 14-course tasting menu, not to mention the amazing staff! Every dish was beautifully presented and thoughtfully put together - we enjoyed every course. We also opted for the wine pairing, which complemented the food perfectly. The restaurant was fully booked, there were only 8 tables (I think!), and it made the whole experience feel wonderfully intimate. The atmosphere was great, too. We had a fantastic evening and will most certainly return the next time we’re in the area!”
