Quick info
About The Goose & Cuckoo Inn
The Goose & Cuckoo Inn is a 16th Century country pub on Gwent Rd in Abergavenny, set in the Upper Llanover valley. A stage area hosts festivals and open mic entertainment, so the pub works as a live venue as well as a place for a drink. The kitchen's dishes include bean soup and rolled lasagne. Weddings and celebrations are held on site, and the surroundings give views across the valley and the countryside beyond. Single-track country lanes lead to the pub, so the final stretch of the journey is on windy roads. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Weddings and celebrations are the strongest thread, with couples describing the setting as unique and beautiful and the team as flexible, even sourcing speciality food and learning to make frozen banana daiquiris on request. Close behind is Sunday lunch, where diners praise the bean soup and the rolled lasagne, and one reviewer calls the food "masterchef" standard. The valley views from the rear verandah and the decked outdoor area come up repeatedly, as does a friendly team who share the pub's history and the festivals held in the stage area. Several say the single track country lanes were worth the drive, and one visitor with dogs mentions the pub dog greeting them. The main caveat comes from a three-star visit, where the reviewer hadn't booked, found the bar staff inexperienced and not very accommodating, and left before the open mic night. Reviewers also describe an old world pub interior with a modern twist outside.

“Those country lanes were hard work. Food looked good but we didn't book, so that's recommend. We had a beer out the back garden with a pleasant view. Oldie world pub inside with a modern twist outside. Inexperienced bar staff could've been a little more accommodating, Entertainment was open mic, didn't stay for that.”

“What a view, great drink offerings and a small and lovely menu, going back for a meal as only had a light lunch, beautiful outdoor decked area real sun spot, keep an eye on events there.”

“A gorgeous pub off the beaten track. Food was really great quality and the views were breathtaking. What really stood out though was the service - a really friendly and welcoming team who were happy to tell us about the history of the pub, and the festivals they run in the stage area. Feel like we stumbled on an absolute gem!”

“We recently had our wedding at The Goose & Cuckoo and it was honestly the perfect day. The setting is out of this world and we still have guests telling us what an amazing and beautiful venue it is. Haf, Kyle and the team were incredible. So helpful, flexible and friendly and they really cared about us and our day. They worked so hard and we can't thank them enough! Haf let us choose what cocktails we wanted them to serve and even learnt how to make frozen banana daiquiris at our request! It was the perfect day, in the perfect place and we would recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat!”

“A great welcome as soon as we came through the door. Decided to dine on the verandah at the rear. Spectacular views of the valley and surrounding countryside. Couldn't fault the food, particularly enjoyed the bean soup. The rolled lasagne was incredibly tasty. Can't wait to return.”
